I am totally new to this and have had my chicks 1 week. I have been watching them constantly and just love them! I noticed the paste on his butt and picked it off and put vaseline. It is bare now and raw looking and looks a little buldging. Will he be alright?

I call it crusty butt and I wouldn't pick or pull at it all that's going to do is pull those little feathers and cause and inflammatory response. So what I do is wet their little tushes with water and kinda massage it out. It comes off quite easy and then I dry them off and send them back in. I don't use soap I'm kinda worried about their skin PH and all that jazz so just plain Luke warm or room temp water. Hope this helps I'm no pro yet but this seems to work for me.

He should be fine if he's pooping! The first time I had to do it the little chick pooped all over me immediately. Make sure it's eating and pooping and that the inflammation doesn't get worse or pecked at and it should be OK.

Sometimes a little dirt on the butt doesn't need to be bothered with but DO check the vents if you see a dirty-ish butt. If the vent is blocked, intervene, or if it looks like its building up and will block the vent, get it off. If not, they can usually take care of their own dirty butts if they can reach back there

I use warm, slightly soapy water and a q-tip. I might not always get it all off but I do clear the vent. I'm not a fan of plucking out down (but I have before) and I'm nervous with scissors down there. You just have to be super gentle around the vent and it takes a little time to soften it up so that you can get it off.

i stick thier butts under warm running water, and sqeeze the little chunks in different directions. i will give you a warning though so you dont go lossing your mind like i did... only get whats near the vent. i found what i had thought was some droppings that my newest had sat in, and it turned out to be a bit of yolk sac that didnt completely obsorb into her navel, and i ended up tearing the whole thing out. shes doing fine now after a little surgery, but for being new and having a big bloddy mess, i was lossing my mind...so you know, if it ever happens, i just snipped off the rest of the sack, smeared her with some iodine and anti biotic ointment, and seperated her, and now shes doing completely fine. just make sure you dont use anything that ends in "caine" cause it will kill them.
