Picking a cockerel to keep?

Just read the thread here as I have two currently 14 weeks. One interested in mounting and a little dancing already, as well as chasing, the other a little more shy and much smaller. How old are yours? I apologize if I missed it.

They are a little over six months old now. I still have both boys. Wyatt is improving in his technique and so far, neither of them are showing an interest in fighting with me. Ringo still seems to seek me out but he cant really visit anymore because Wyatt doesn't approve of him being at an elevated position out in the yard. He will chase Ringo into the coop where he seeks refuge on the roost in there.

It's not all horrible though. Ringo is able to wander the run for the most part and in the heat of the day, they can both lay down for a snooze.

I have a friend who just bought some acreage nearby so I'm hopeful he'll clean his coop out soon and take on Wyatt and a couple of the ladies. So far, Wyatt is a good roo and I'd hate to stew him up if he's not really a problem.

Here are my reasons, ultimately, that I'm going to move Wyatt from the flock:

1. I'm human and I really like Ringo
2. I hate Wyatt's crow
3. Wyatt is huge and one of my hens is way smaller compared to him. I'm afraid he's going to accidentally hurt her
4. Although he's improving, I don't really care for the way he mates the hens. He's pretty clumsy.

Your decision which one to keep depends on your flock management goals. If you plan to permit either cockerel to breed and produce chicks, and your hens are mostly standard breeds, then probably neither cockerel will be a good choice, one being too small to do the job, and the other too large to safely mate much smaller hens.

If you simply want to have a rooster around for entertainment and to lead the flock, then only you are in a position to know which boy has the better temperament.

Also, I see that I haven't updated.

I kept Ringo. I sent Wyatt on to a friend with two of the girls so he had a trio to start with. It took Ringo about a week to take over duties, but so far so good. I've learned that little children upset Ringo greatly but that's not a problem in my setting since I don't have any nor will I be having any. I'm still not convinced he isn't going to decide I'm a problem one day, but as it is right now, we are peaceful with one another.

I will be keeping one to lead the flock and i will have 9 hens hopefully. So what is the better option with that many hens and if I see it is necessary I will be getting saddles for them.

For 9 hens, you only need one cockerel/rooster, if you must have a rooster at all.
