Picking location for small coup-----direct sunlight question.

Cats often seem to love chickens as much as most dogs do - for breakfast, lunch or dinner- or just plain thrill of the chase and scaring them too death. Feral animals, as well as free running dogs and cats, and even family pets are often the culprits. If you always keep them separated, your birds can flourish.

Thanks everyone for the help. We are still considering if we can even do a coop. Our space is very tight. Only a few ft. on each side of the house. Most of it is steep and planted with Lavender. Plus we have tons of cats in the hood and the one next to us thinks he owns our yard and is kind wild. Not sure if I have enough room to make an enclosed chicken run. We also have lots of foxes, badgers and other animals that would be at our doorstep with chickens there.

I got a design idea from YT for a small chicken coop now because I want to make it more 'oder free', since it would be pretty

close to the door.

I want to make one of those 'drop through bottom' coops that's raised off the ground so the poop can fall through to some

leaves/mulch on the ground. Maybe also put some straw in there that can then fall through the bottom with the poop to turn into

compost.

Question is....will a drop through bottom coop, (forget what they call that), be too cold for the chickens at night? We have cold,

below zero long winters here.

Would just putting some paper or something on the bottom of the coop keep them warm enough? thnx
