I've been debating with myself for about 2 weeks on whether or not to order some chicks. I have some BO pullets and a cockerel but wanted something that could turn in to meat a little quicker since they aren't laying yet. I didn't really want to order from a hatchery and have them shipped because it has been so hot. I posted a "chickens wanted" ad on Craigslist a few days back but got no interest.
This morning I was at the point of clicking the "place order" button on Meyer's site when I changed my mind. Then, this afternoon, I got a responce to my ad. Someone near me has Jersey Giants. Blue, splash and black. 4-7 days old. He wants $1 each!

So, I will be picking up 20-30 of them in the morning!!!! I'm so excited. He is going to box them up and take them to work with him because it is closer to me.

I know giants take longer to grow but I really wanted some.

SO excited!

I am really LOVING Alabama and the people here.

I picked up 30 Jersey Giants this morning. The breeder is NPIP certified and is a member of the giant breed club.

Blues, splashes and blacks!

So, I have the babies set up in a brooder in the coop/shelter. I had to block off part of the shelter because one of my landlord's horses was sticking her head in there. She smelled their feed and was really trying to get to it.
The chicks range in age from what looks like 1-2 day olds to one week. It has been about 2 years since I've had chicks this young. They are very cute and very loud. I forgot how loud chicks were. But then again, the last time I had chicks this young I only had 10.

Have fun with your chickies! wow, you got them at a great price! Blue and splash sound very pretty :)

They are too cute!! I have a jersey giant and she is the biggest sweetest thing ever!

ahhh they are so cute! Almost most makes me want to brood some more! I am ordering a few more tomorrow but won't get them until October. What is wrong with getting from a hatchery? Other than you got a great deal from a CL.

Absolutely nothing wrong with a hatchery. I was just hoping to get some at a few days old (less losses) and be able to get a deal. The best deals I found were the "fry pan" specials (cheapest was 25 for ~$30 with shipping) but those would be all roos unless the sexers made a mistake. At least this way I have a (theoretical) 50/50 shot at male/female. I also didn't have to have them shipped in this heat.

I want them mostly for meat (though with giants it will be a while). I was very happy to find someone local to purchase from that takes pride in his stock. Again, he is NPIP and only raises giants. I am so excited about the colors too. I can't wait to see what some of them feather out to.
