My hen (age 2) developed a messy vent about 3 weeks ago. By the time I researched it here and developed a plan it was a little messier.

From everyone's posts, I assumed I was dealing with vent gleet and prepared to treat that--purchased anti fungal, vinegar, etc.

When I got in there with soaking and cleansing, I discovered a prolapse, with some dead tissue. Back to the forums to research that.

I've now been treating that for a week; have been soaking, pushing the prolapse back in, debriding the dead tissue, using Prep. H and Bag Balm, Ventricyn, soft foods, dark room. No eggs have been laid in over a week.

Status now: She is much improved --Her energy is 100 times better, she is now vigorous and resisting soaking. Eager to eat, whereas before she was lackluster.

But these symptoms remain after a full week of indoor life and soaking/medication: Just leaky vent, with white poop that keeps oozing out, vs. regular formed chicken poop; the prolapse is gone (internal now) but the vent is still quite swollen and red. It has like a hard 'lip' that won't resolve.

Could she have vent gleet AND resolving prolapse? Something is still just not right.

Or does this recovery just need more time? What is the average recovery time for prolapse?

Can post photos tomorrow if needed.

I have one with similar symptoms so I’d love to follow and also ask: if you are using a OTC anti fungal, which one? I’ve seen on BYC Nystatin is a prescription anti fungal but I don’t have access to it now. Any advice on antifungal usage for vent gleet?

I haven't used the anti fungal yet, because the prolapse was the more immediate issue and needed a lot of treatment to get things 'back in place.' There were several good threads here on simple vent gleet.

Here are some pics this a.m. YOu can see the poop just draining out and the 'hard' swelling that won't resolve.

I'd just search BYC for vent gleet treatment. There will be lots of info for how to administer. I will do the same and post links.

Thank you! Just out of curiosity, is it common for gleet to cause prolapse, or prolapse to co-occur with gleet?
