Those are called chicken saddles. They came with the flock because the Rooster, Randy, is apparently appropriately named. They keep the hens from getting torn up when he jumps them - which is a regular occupation of his.

awsome looking home for the "girls and guy", lots of neat ideas that I need to try, the cement block- I use 2 patio blocks for my waterer, they fill it in in the mornings! Grrrr.
