I use milk crates with a portion of one side cut out. top is open to reach into from nesting box lid and front is "U" shaped to retain shavings and keep eggs from rolling out.

im not exactly in love with my nest box right now - so im loving all the great ideas

we are moving in a month and the coop will be partially dismantled to move it so some improvements might take place

ssssshhhhh because DH doesnt know this yet
