I had a very sad Welsummer with a bad wing. Since she could not roost I gave her an at the time 4 week old chick, I bought from someone who didn't want a rooster. He is now about 9+weeks old. The have bonded ever since and he never leaves her side and her wing seams to have healed.

So heartwarming!
