Can someone tell me how to get a picture small enough to use on my profile?

Are you talking about your avatar?

This is what I do. I upload a picture to photobucket.com.

Then I edit the picture to the size of an avatar. Click edit then click resize and chick avatar.

Then I right click on the picture and save it to my desktop.

Then go to Profile, Personality, and Change avatar.
