Pig help please

Yes mom does the opposite of socializing them with people. I take mine after 48 hours and pan feed them because I know they will be people’s pets and need to learn the ropes of living with humans. I got my pig Pua when she was four weeks old and completely wild and though I won her over will belly scratches and we are friends she is not cut out to be indoors. But the her first litter and one of my neighbors that I pan fed have done well in the house. Pua is still a great pig. She grew up in the chicken coop to. Those chickens are her family.

Neutering will help quite a bit. I used to hide treats for Hammy, he enjoyed that quite a bit. He loved to tip over buckets to see what was under or in them.
Are you going to have their tusks removed? I know there are times I would have been gored if I hadn't had it done. Or my dogs may have been.

Thanks @Farmer Connie
I'm not sure how much it costs to get tusks removed but I probably will for my own safety. I've heard that not all pigs grow tusks, is that true?

Jeez, I didn't know people separated them so soon! The treat idea might work well since I have one of those for my cats (which they never use).

The male pig on my property is about two and a half and he’s finally getting tusks. The only time I’ve ever had conflict with him was when I tried to get between him and a female in heat. If he were mine I would have looked into getting the tusks removed.

I wouldn’t have but she squished 4 out of eight on accident or I would have waited a week. Her milk is better for them then replacer milk and they are impossible to bottle feed. I knew I could do it because my neighbors pig squished 2 out of three so I pan fed him for her. She got him neutered around the same age as your pigs are now and he’s a model citizen on the property. He is SO spoiled.

Wow! I didn't know that was an issue with momma pigs. You would assume that they'd take pretty good care of their babies. As of now, I can't wait to get them fixed just because of that musky smell they get. Do you know if there's an age limit on getting the tusks removed?

It’s common. People use feeder gates so the moms can’t smash them. I was only going to leave them with her for a week because I was afraid that replacer milk would make them scour.(Get sick and have diarrhea it can kill them very quick) but I found some good replacer and paid a pretty penny for it. They never got sick. I had planned to take them at a week either way to socialize them. They are born walking and moving and I didn’t want Pua to teach them bad habits. I was thinking of the future owners for sure.

I don’t know if there is an age limit on having tusks removed but pigs are strong and it’s probably easier and safer for you and the pig if it’s done while they are little.
