Hi everyone.

I have my female pigeon sitting on eggs and somtimes she see's me putting food in there bowl. My problem is the male does not take over for that 1 miniute she is out of the bowl eating. they both eat together. It is only a minute but is that ok. I have seen him go and switch other times but it was a longer period of time. Every time i go to check on them it is the female though that is over the eggs. I also have another question, one of my egg is slightly bigger than the other is that ok.

Is this normal.

please help

That is perfectly normal and nothing to fear. Imagine mallard ducks for example the duck incubates the eggs solo with no help from the drake.

There are times the nest is left vacant for periods of time (although she does cover her eggs with down) while she feeds. Birds seem to have a built in thermostat that lets them know when it is warm enough to leave the nest.

As long as the egg is not extremely smaller do I see much of a problem (half the size say).

If this is her first clutch of eggs however it is not uncommon for only one egg to hatch..

Wishing you best of luck 210175

GOOD.
She did it yesterday and i was scared but she loves her eggs and they are right in the middle of the nest with the straw around them. I was worried but outside was a warm 16 deggreas for winter and there is plenty of cover where the nest is. what about the egg size though is that normal?

thanks

thanks, I might not do that though. I want to try to leave them alone. I have heard about that before though but i might leave it for this time. Thanks for that though. But im sure they are fertile because before she layed it was constant mating.

Only 2 more week left today.

I will post some pics in near future

Yes if one egg is smaller especially young hens first time/s some toss first one to two or three sets of eggs due to possible infertility. I've found infertility in some that way, but still let her keep for week before candling as it helps as practic and get mothering down. after week, i candle, done by cupping bright flashlight pointing up in hand, then cradling egg on top of that turning completely around looking for veining. if just clear all yellow or darning without anything else or red ring, then infertile or going rotton probly. its a lot sooner and much easier than chickens.
