Hi everyone, Just out of question, is it normal for pigeon to sometimes leave there eggs for only a minute or two in winter time. Because today I walked past and both my pigeon were on the floor but then the female went up to the eggs strait away. they were off the nest for two minutes tops.

the temp is 9 Celsius.

Is this ok or should I be worried about the squabs inside, it is day 3 of icubation

You are going to have gray hair before your time!

I had this pigeon and his mate hatch out squabs on the 26 &27 of December 2012.

I live in Canada temperatures this year reached -40º! I did nothing extra until the squabs were too big to incubate then I moved nest and all in this Styrofoam cooler.

Yes even in those frigged temperatures mom & dad left the nest for brief periods when I came into the loft with hand fed treats. My loft is ¼ inch plywood no heat or insulation.

Jack (Jacqueline now) and Frostie.
They now have squabs of their own (different partners).

I wish someone would tell my pigeons their offspring is always supposed to be snow white!!!.

thanks, i just worry because they are still eggs and i dont want them to cool to much or they will die but after 2 minuets they are on the eggs.

Just out of question how long does it take in 9 celcius weather for them to get to cold and die?

Embryos are less sensitive to cold than to heat, particularly before incubation has started. Mallard eggs have been known to crack by freezing and still hatch successfully.

There are too many variables at play to give you an answer. The best indicator is the instinct of the bird.

The parents will abandon the eggs and nest.

They have a sixth sense and pigeons especially because of their excellent hearing can hear the embryos heart beat is my guess.

Pigeons can hear sounds that we can't: specifically, they can hear extreme low frequency sounds, called infrasounds.

I do not think they are quite as adapt if it is their first clutch of eggs.

it is there second clutch. I dont think i need to worry. they are really good pigeons. im sure the eggs would not of got that cold in the couple of minutes.

she always goes back to them.

thanks hokum

I dont really like to tamper with the eggs. But if they dont hatch in the next 15 day i will candle the eggs, Im the type to not tamper because i want it to be a suprise.

just back to that question how long after incubation has commenced, if the pigeon get of the eggs how long before they get cold and die?

Not that im really worried now

I HAVE A QUESTION ( A STUPID QUESTION) IS IT OK TO PUT BANTAM EGGS UNDER YOUR PIGEONS. I TOOK THE 2 PIGEON EGGS OUT FROM UNDER THEM AND PUT THE BANTY EGGS UNDER THEM IS THAT OK?
