Hey guys and gals. I'm planning a pigeon loft and need help deciding on how big to build. I will be keeping a squabbing breed (probably kings or Texan pioneers) and about 8 pairs of homers. I will probably have 10-12 pairs total. Some sites tell me that 1 to 2 square feet of floor space will suffice but others say as many as 10. My homers will be used as breeding stock for dove release but my release birds will be housed in a kit box and will not be bred. The homers will also be flown daily except for times of bad weather.

I see the need of a shed structure 8' X 10' to accommodate what you plan to do. Inside you will have to build not only perches, but also breeding boxes. You will also need an aviary attached to your loft. If not able to provide one, then I suggest making one wall totally Mesh hardware cloth. A friend pigeon keeper has such a setup.
I would keep the Kings and Homers separate. 2 different types with different purposes. JMO.
WISHING YOU BEST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and :welcome

I would say make it as big as you can afford. If it's nice and roomy, you won't have to clean as often, and the birds will stay healthier.
As Caveman says, a partition between the two breeds would be wise. Otherwise you WILL have interbreeding, and I don't think those squabbers will do a thing for your homers' bloodline.
And definitely an aviary!!!
