Might wanna add graphic pic to the title!

That was gross!

I think that "tumor" was a hernia. It would be very unlikely for pigs of that age to have tumors.

Oops my daughter was sitting here next to me and saw it....

but luckily she knows what happens to food animals. I was expecting to read something of the sort that you bought some cute piggies...well, that is why those pigs were at the auction. sadly too many animals end up at the meat auctions and were never treated decently to begin with. I would have bought them too but I would have gotten them medical help and then kept them as pets, but that is just me, I am not opposed to having a pig or two for meat, but I like to buy mine from an organic farm as soon as they are weaned and care for them and give them the best life before they serve their purpose. I would have that pig inspected before you consume the meat, you never know. good luck!!

It certainly would be a crying shame if we taught kids where their food comes from, that's for sure.

Wait... no, no it wouldn't.

Seriously, a dead pig is not the end of the world. Even if you're vegan it's a learning experience. Seize it! "That is how pork is made. We don't agree with killing animals for food, so that's why we don't eat pork. What do you think about it?" Or if you're not "That's how pork is made. The pigs are grown out to a certain size and then processed. The cut is where they drain the blood so that our meat isn't bloody. Do you have any questions about the process that I can answer?"

As for the pigs, it very well could be a hernia gone too far. The other one with the tumor on the elbow, it may be an abscess. Is it soft? For the limp there is also the possibility of infectious arthritis. In a nutshell, there's a reason people weren't bidding.

Could have told you it was a hernia before you even butchered it. The ones on the elbows are not tumors either. Just grow them out and enjoy.

Looks like it's already done, but what I'd do with a young animal I didn't have any history on for food purposes is to raise it on a diet I know about for about a month or so just in case.
