Pigs

My wife and I wanted to raise two pigs this year but didn't because of how much i figured it would cost. By the time i bought two piglets fed then till maturity took then to the butcher i was gonna have $1000 wrapped up in them, then after figuring about what the price per pound was it was around$4.00 where is the incentive there? Just wondered if anyone new a better way

Well, we got 2 feeder pigs this year. This is our first time doing it. We are expecting them to forage for food (and they are) along with getting fed minimal feed and whatever 'slop' we have from our meals. We feel that the cost of fencing off an area is an investment. We will bring to butcher in the fall but I cannot remember what the price we were quoted at the moment. What are the benefits to us? We are getting hormone, antibiotic free pork. We will move the pigs in the fall to our garden to finish off the plants and fertilize. For us, the price of raising our own meat is worth it.

That's about what ours have been running. This year we set up to buy feed in bulk and it's going to save us about half in feed costs. The big issue is unloading 1500lbs out of the back of the truck. Thankfully our tractor just managed, otherwise we'd have to bucket it into trash cans or similar.

We usually raise up one or more animals than we need personally and sell the extra, that can offset some of our costs also.

Think about it. Would you rather eat a sad pig that lived a sad, overcrowded, miserable lifestyle. Or a happy, fat, farm pig that had a great life. I don't know about you but I would go with the farm pig
