Pilgrims?

It's hard to choose the prettier of the two girls.

They do have a new man in their lives now, as yet, un-named.

Thanks, Sweetshoplady! We are lucky to have a few acres of land for our geese and chickens to free range on during the day. The geese have become neighborhood fixtures. Our neighbors up and down the road ask about them and slow down to look at them when they drive by. That pic was taken just a few months ago - October, I think.

Hello all you Pilgrim owners!

I love your birds.
I am interested in getting Pilgrim geese but I have a couple questions first......
-can they fly, or are they good flyers. can a small fence keep them in?
-do females go broody often? if so are they good mothers?
-what is a good male to female ratio?
-are they big birds? will barn cats bother them?
thanks alot!!!!!

Could someone tell me the difference between Pilgrim and Toulouse geese please? It looks like maybe a size difference? The geese in the leaves look just like mine and I have thought I had Toulouse now for 22 years! LOL--Terri O in WI

Well the bigest difference is that the ganders of the Pilgrims are WHITE the female Pilgrim should be a slightly lighter shade of gray than a Toulouse and often has some white around the face that neither breed is supposed to have. Also there is the size difference pilgrims are considered medium geese and toulouse ane supposed to be heavy geese and really should have dewlaps while pilgrims should not. It is tough sometimes to tell a Pilgrim female from a Toulouse when they are yearlings, as they age it becomes easy.

-can they fly, or are they good flyers. can a small fence keep them in?They can learn to fly when they are young and light if raised with other flying species. When raised with other ground huggers they usually don't. A small fence can usually keep them in though I had one gander that learned to climb 2x4 mesh to be with his Tufted Roman girl friend
-do females go broody often? if so are they good mothers? The females usually do go broody if thats what you mean, usually once per season. If a nest should get broken up early they usually will try again if possible. BOTH parents take part in raising the family and are usually very good at it!
-what is a good male to female ratio?well my gander fathered 2 famlies with the Pilgrim pair of geese I got for him and while they were brooding climbed the fence and and fathered a mixed bag of tufted gpslings with a tufted Roman so I guess he would say 3 females per gander!
-are they big birds? will barn cats bother them?Medium goose sized. My cat showed some interest in the goslings but the adults soon taught it to stay away. I guess it depends upon the number and sizes of the cats
thanks alot!!!!!

In MHO they are just about the perfect goose to have around.

Hi,

I would like to buy hatching eggs from anyone who has the "Ashbrook Strain" of Pilgrims. Please send me a personal email if you can help. I would also buy a pair if goslings or even adults if you are local.

God Bless,
