Pills - Comparison: Dogs vs. Cats

Wow... You people are so lucky with your cats! We've tried almost everything you can think of - the tuna juice, the pill gun, etc. Nothing works except making them a cat mummy and shoving it down their throats. Maybe we should look into the Pill Pockets for them... Not too sure if they'll work, but they sound worth a try sometime.

The vet was trying to sell me some of those greenies things. She put Lucy's (avatar dog) pill in one and handed it to her. The vet then proceeded to explain to me that all dogs would just gobble it right up and how they couldn't seperate the pill from the treat and how it was worth the pile of money that she wanted me to spend. About that time, Lucy neatly spit the pill out at her feet and sweetly sat to ask for another treat, tongue lolling and tail wagging the whole time.

It took all I had to not snort with laughter. The look on the vet's face was priceless. Needless to say, we left without the green things.

My dogs will gobble most things up with little provocation. Usually I can get a pill hidden in some cheese or something. Thankfully I haven't had to give the cats pills. Everytime they need on the vet says "You can pay $10 for two weeks of pills or $30 for the one time shot". I always cough up the money for the shot. I figure I eventually save money on the ER bill.

That’s how we at the vets do it; smash it into a powder than mix it with some tasty wet cat food and down it goes. But I have ran in to some very tricky dogs there that could actually manage to spit out the pill while still eating the treat I end up having to shove it to down their throats (which is never much fun for either of us) or smash it up as well!

When I had to give my sisters cat pills I just held him tightly in my lap, opened his mouth, and dropped the pill in the back. It would only work if I kept his nose in the air until he swallowed. He became an expert pill spitter though, sometimes I could SWEAR he swallowed it but then find it on the floor hours later. I was lucky though in that his head is small and long rather than wide, so he's easy to manage.

Years ago, my first cat was on pills for 2 weeks. Got them all down her just fine. A couple months later I moved the couch and found 11 of the 14 pills in a nice little pile under the couch.
