Pine Shavings

Check out craigslist

If only I lived in California.
I live in North Carolina and mostly am wondering where pine shavings get produced so I can go to the source.

I'd call around. Custom furniture / cabinetry places often have piles you can come and bag yourself. Basically, any place that is doing custom woodwork should have shavings. They probably won't all be pine shavings, but I'm not terribly concerned about it. If you only want pine, you could buy it in bundles from the feed store. You could also use pine in the nesting boxes and the stuff from the places above for everywhere else.

Nifty...I should have know better. That was an absolute "duh" on my part. We have plenty of furniture and cabinetry places around. Thanks for the input.

At my local country feed store here in Coldspring, Tx., pine shaving cost $5.60 for a sack that contains 12 cubic yards compressed, that a whole lot shavings. Some Wal-Mart have them in the pet department and I suspect they might be even cheaper. Be sure you don't get free shaving that contain cedar.

You might do what I just did, I found a rancher with a bunch of loose hay where he stores his cattle hay, he told me to clean out the hay shed and I could have all the loose stuff. Three big pickup loads and it was very clean, just loose which made it easy to spread.

I get bags of the shavings from the local feed store - maybe 6 bucks or so for a bag that is compressed and once released there's a whole lot of shavings to be had. I don't recall the actual volume but the bag itself is maybe 3'x2'x1.5'

I get all my shavings from two cabinetry places. I supply a garbage can, they fill it. They're more than happy that I take it.....as that means they don't have to pay to haul it to the dump. The owner of the first place I started taking shavings from comes out every once in a while and says "Are you STILL helping me!?" and I reply "I told you that I needed more than you could supply!". He shakes his head and chuckles as he goes back inside! It's been over a year now.

I also use it in my garden as mulch...few layers of newspaper (cardboard around trees), 2-3inches of shavings...voila! weed free flower beds!
