PINE VS. CEDAR shavings????? NEED YOUR INPUT PLEASE

Cedar shavings permanetly stain the eggs when laid on them. I guess as everyone else says they are bad for their health too.

I'd personally use pine and hay over sand just because I don't want to add sand to my soil. We have a predominantly loam soil and I aim to keep it that way. Plus pine composts better than cedar as it has a lower carbon density. Sand doesn't compost, it's rock. Sand is adsorbant not absorbant so it doesn't actually fill with water, it has a 20% water holding capasity where as pine is something like 70%.

I like to use hay chaff as it is the little millings (sans dirt/dusty stuff) that can't stay in the bale. It's small, tasty, and composts like a dream.
