Pinioned?

Because the bones have not began to develope as much and the wing is smaller and thinner. They have no feathers which makes it easier in general. It is not so much of a crunch as a soft cut and not so much of a full on wing. Just a tiny nub with a tiny cut. It is less stressful in my experience. Right when they leave the bator not much effects them that wouldn't already happen and they have the yolk sac to absorb and keep them going. They aren't moving much and just snuggle up under the light with the little bloody spot on the wing and seem basically uneffected.

Just my ways. I've done it only a small ammount of times and this worked for me.

YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT QUAIL IN THIS RESPONSE YES?

Why? Do you disagree? Why would I talk about anything but quail in a response to about pinioning quail.

Why? Do you disagree? RESPECTFULLY, YES. I WONT DO IT TO ANYTHING LESS THAN 2 WKS OLD.. TOO YOUNG AND FRAGILE. I ROUTINELY PINION 6 WK OLD WOOD DUCKS... THERE'S NO CRUNCH THERE

AND MAYBE ITS JUST ME... I AM NOT A KID ANYMORE, HANDS ARE LARGE AND NOT SO NIMBLE... MUCH EASIER TO CUT WHAT YOU CAN SEE AND GET AHOLD OF, AND IF DONE PROPERLY WITH THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT ITS EASY ENOUGH ON 2 YR OLD CHICKEN ROOSTERS OR DUCKS Why would I talk about anything but quail in a response to about pinioning quail.

YOUR RESPONSE USES CHICKEN TIMES. ALSO THERE ARE MANY CASES OF FOLKS FROM OTHER WALKS OF POULTRY CHIMING IN ON QUAIL THREADS... CHICKEN TIMES APPLIED TO QUAIL USUALLY DONT WORK OUT SO WELL

I can see that you and I have different opinions. 6wee old wood ducks can die of shock from pinioning. Big hands or not it should be done when ducklings are VERY young. Baby quail aren't as fragile as everyone seems to think. When pinioned straight out of the bator nothing tends to happen. They are pretty frisky even that young.

AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A FEDERALLY LICENCED GAME FARM SPECIALIZING IN MIGRATORY WATERFOWL???

Federally Licensed Gqamebird Farm doesn't mean you know everything and it certainly doesn't change my point of view on pinioning! By your point of view you are correct, by my point of view you are incorrect. That's what it is, different points of view. My way has worked for me and your way for you. Since neither opinion is likely to change, I'm done arguing.

I'm done with this, so you can put the popcorn away and stop bumping the thread.

7 years experience with gamebirds and poultry. My experience with gamebirds, mostly quail comes from hatching and reselling them for a friend.

Look JJ has more expierience than both of us combined. He is federalyl liscensed and a breeder. He sure as he!! knows what he is doing. Plus I would never risk killing something ( especialyl that expensive) on your oppinion. I haven't done it much, but day olds aren't that strong.

Just head on over to the Ornamental fowl section and read up on pinioning waterfowl there. Nearly every breeder will tell you to pinion at 1 day of age and not at 6 weeks. Most hesitate after 2 weeks. 5/5 muscovies lived for me at day one and countless other birds from other people.

As far as quail. 9/10 in one batch and 8/8 in a second batch is good odds for my opinion's sake. Certainly JJ will post about the hundreds he has done at 3 weeks, but for a small scale grower 17/18 is good odds for pinioning at one day old. No blood, no noticable stress, and everyone was eating and drinking fine in a few hours and acting normally.

I have experience, though not as much as JJ, and I base my argument on that experience.

Not to insult those with federal licensing, but i've seen some really questionable people with federal license. Some who have 100 Bobwhites in a 10x15 pen with full lighting. Some that raise cornish cross chickens in their chukar and quail pens to make an extra dollar. I've seen some horror stories. One even shipped me a pair of chukars with an attached note stating, "There's been a virus going around here. If they die within the next week I will offer a full refund."

My appologies I did say I was finished.
