I noticed a red rash on both my Rhode Island Red’s legs yesterday. It was still there this am when I checked on them. Neither of my other two chickens have it. She also has a small red patch on her belly just below her vent. She may have gotten bit by fire ants as they were digging around some I didn’t know about. She is eating, drinking, laying & pooping normally. I chef for red mites on their roosts with a white paper towel and found nothing. I also searched on her body and found nothing. Here are a few pictures I took after I soaked her in a epsom salt bath.

Any ideas???[

Hi there, hope you are enjoying BYC! :frow

Looks like hormonal flush.. a very common cause of panic in new keepers. Are they still young.. not laying yet?? Cold weather also turns my birds feet red.

The belly patch still looks light pink.. like maybe pressure from sitting or warmth. Bug skin often looks angry red by comparison.

Overall I don't see any cause for alarm and would say nice job keeping your eyes open and noticing things! :highfive:

I would suggest doing another parasite check after dark using a flashlight as it can be much more revealing than a daytime check... just for confirmation. Please post a photo of the bird with dry feathers? The behavior you describe sounds healthy. Maybe I just like to see pretty ladies! :pop

Thanks for the advise!! I am fairly new and I do worry about them. I inherited them in Dec. (long story) I don’t know how old they are but all three are still laying. We lost 2 of the 5. We got 2 Columbian Wyandotte & 2 Golden Sex Links chicks that are 9 weeks old now. We are getting ready to move them into the new coop we are just finishing building. These are pictures of a dry Reba!!

She's lovely. :love

Looks like she is in good condition.

Consider adding a one time monthly night time parasite check into routine since things that have never been an issue before can show up at any time. It helps catch things early and reduces chance of infestation. Don't treat what you don't have evidence of though as it helps keep treatments effective when they are needed. :)
