Pionus or caique

Something else to think about. Every morning before I leave for work I have to make sure he has fresh water, seeds and pellets, and fresh foods. There's no rushing out the door for me. I have to chop his fresh fruits and veggies. It's a chore. I have to plan my shopping to make sure I have fresh fruit and greens in the house and then prepare them every morning so he has them fresh for the day. It's a responsibility and no one in my family can do it if I can't because they are all afraid of him. He will lay on his back in my hand, let me kiss his beak and scritch his pin feathers, clip his nails and generally lets me do anything to him. But he HATES anyone else in my family. So the responsibility is mine alone.

You don't have to do the daily chopping. I found this recipe, and made a variation for Sammy. Basically, I make a big batch of chopped fresh veggies, greens and some fruit, and then scoop it into ziplock freezer bags. I suck out the air, press the mash flat, and freeze. To serve, I take one bag out of the freezer the night before, and put it in the fridge. I break off a piece (it's still usually a bit frozen in the morning) and put it in Sammy's dish. The second day, it's thawed completely, and I just scoop it out. This way, I have to prepare the food only once every other month or so.

My variation on the linked recipe is that instead of putting the seeds and beans in the mash, I feed Sammy sprouted China Prairie. I mix this with his veggie mash, or sometimes I give sprouts in the morning and veggie mash in the evening.

we used to always have bags of frozen mixed vegetables in the freezer for everyone. Very handy stuff. Then they would also get assorted fresh fruits and veggies that were in season when we weren't rushing around that day..usually in the evening about the same time we were eating our family dinner .
