Pipd's Peeps!

Me, too. I hate that it happens so frequently with production sexlinks like her. She and her sister, Sora, are 6 this spring, though, so they've already lived twice as long as most of the other red sexlinks I've owned. Hopefully they both have some years ahead of them still. :fl Skua is still eating, drinking, getting along great, she just has moments where she'll just stand somewhere for a while, eyes closed like she's uncomfortable. Poor thing. :( I can't find anything outwardly wrong with her and I don't feel an egg stuck in her (from the outside, at least; I don't know if I should do an internal inspection or not). Not sure what else to think, especially with her being so active and seemingly fine half the time.

I do love the feeling of turning in that last piece of homework... I'll love it more when it's the last homework of the entire semester, though!

I hope Skua gets to feeling better soon. 6 years is very old for a sex link. That is so sad that the breed is known for laying eggs even when they don't feel up to it. I have an isa brown and I would never have bought her if I had known the backround of the breed. She is friendly and she is tamer then my ophingtons I hope she lives a long life but it's not in her genes.

Yes, that's the sad part. They're such friendly, personable birds, but it is my opinion now that the kindest thing for them is to be raised on a farm where they will be processed before they can start coming down with all sorts of issues. :( That's why I won't buy anymore. My girls will live out their lives as long as their bodies will allow, and then I will never get another! I hope your girl is like these two and at least has a longer than expected lifespan. I've heard of people having sexlinks live to 9 years of age, here's hoping for that! The last time I was out there with the girls, Skua was looking just as perky as ever. :fl

So, when I let Margie take her bathroom break this afternoon, I candled the eggs to see if it was time for lockdown yet or not. Looks like they are a day or two from lockdown!! (They are on day 16 today, and they actually look like they're around that stage at this point, rather than looking early!) I did find one late quitter in the bunch, though. Looks like the baby gave up just a day or two ago. I left it under her, but it was still and its veins had become choppy, so I'm pretty sure it's done. :/ But it's to be expected sometimes. The other 4 babies look healthy and normal, and they even shifted around in their eggs a little when I gently tapped the shell. :love I can't wait to hold them and love on them!! Their last big challenge is getting out of their shells! :fl Come on, babies!!

Hopefully Suka will be okay

I agree that RSL are very friendly birds, but due to all the health problems I've heard about them... I would rather not have them. Yet last year I ended up with two RSL pullets named Fred and George?? Sorry off topic.

It's sad to hear about that one, but I'm glad the others seem to be doing well! Silkie chicks are so cute

you must post pictures! I actually just set eggs for the Easter Hatch-a-Long so I should have to wait too long...

Haha, funny how they end up in our lives anyway! I hope your girls avoid the issues, too. :)

Yes!! Silkie babies!! I need them now!!! :D Can't wait to see your babies when they hatch! Margie's babies will probably be at the start of that gawky and awkward stage by then!

Wait, silkies have an awkward stage?

You could end up with all pullets and have a broody army though, I don't know about you but it sounds a little dangerous

I can't wait either, I have been ready for chicks for awhile now (thus causing me to stop by the feed store and get a list of chicks they will have

). Not long before they hatch I plan on getting a Fayoumi and a EE friend for it so my wait is a little shorter... I better be careful or I'll end up with a ton of birds this years, and it's not very good that one of my BSL girls has gone broody on me!

Oh yeah, how long until your Meyer chicks should hatch?

Yup, believe it or not! I have seen the evidence! I couldn't find the picture I was thinking of that really shows baby Silkie awkwardness, but here's one off of Google that made me giggle. :D

With my luck, they will all be pullets anyway because I wanted Reuben to have some sons to train up. I'm figuring either they will all be boys, or all girls. But I'm okay with that. :) Hopefully any boys get along with their dad so that I don't have to separate them out!

And I have definitely been there!! I can't tell you how many times since placing my order at Meyer Hatchery that I have looked at their catalog and then had to re-convince myself that I don't need to add any more chicks to my order. They're due in 71 days!! :D

This was my Silkie when she was young... Awkward stage? I don't know what you're talking about!

And those chicks will be here before you know it! So excited for you!

So cute... I get to see a bunch of pictures of silkies, frizzles, and sizzles at that stage due to the amount of people around me that have them, why must people further tempt me into getting silkies?

It'll be interesting see what they end up being, hopefully you get some of both.

I started buying my feed from a local mill, but once my chicks hatch and I have to buy food for them

I will have to leave any extra money at home. Oh man, chick catalogs are the worst.
Yay! It gets closer everday!

"What awkward stage? I don't see no awkward stage here."
