Pipd's Peeps!

She was so beautiful, I hope the weather cooperates so you can properly take care of her. You couldn't have done anything to save her either 🥺 I'm so sorry Pipd.

I'm so glad you have her chicks, I hope they are even more gorgeous than Judy Booty!

I agree, I really don't think even if I had gone out to their coop earlier last evening that I could have done anything to prevent her passing. Such a shame, though. I had forgotten that she was a June 2023 baby, so she wasn't even a year old yet. 😢

She's been given a proper send off now. :hugs I kept her leg bands and a few feathers to remember her by.

Here they are.
Apparently the sebright was giving the guy a hard time to catch. She's got a scrape on her nose. But, she is quite feisty - yelling at me when I was checking her over.
The bb red oegb was also yelling at me and chatting like she was telling me all about the trauma.
The blue one is pretty calm and mellow.
They seem pretty hungry as they all went to the food dish as soon as they were all in their pen. View attachment 3847488View attachment 3847489

Love them!! 😍 What gorgeous little ladies! Hopefully they all warm up to you okay. They look nice and healthy, too, knock on wood :fl

I'm wondering if the blue one is a Dutch bantam? I started wondering due to her earlobes. My pet chicken has this on their website (found through an image search). Thoughts? I can get better pics of her. It doesn't matter either way. I once thought a brahma I got was an EE because that's what I was told by the person who gave her to me until someone here on byc pointed out that it was a hatchery quality brahma. 🤣

Those are really pretty!

I've definitely done that with pullet vs cockerel

It is possible! Blue Dutch bantams are pretty rare from my understanding! It's not unheard of for hatchery OEGBs to have incorrect earlobe color, though, and there are also Blue Rosecomb bantams that look similar and that sometimes throw single-combed individuals like her... 🤔 So she's kind of a tricky one to be sure of, because she could feasibly be any of those possibilities, and any of those possibilities are more or less equally likely to boot!

I don't think it would necessarily be wrong to just say she's a Blue Dutch, though, because she does have the outward traits of the breed. 🙂

Yeah, I feel like a single-combed Rosecomb is the most likely answer, personally. I know all three of those breeds and varieties (editing, I mean the Sebright, OEGB, and Blue Rosecomb, of course!) would be fairly common in a TSC bantam bin mix, so it's pretty likely they could have been purchased together as chicks in that way. But, I can't rule out the others fully, of course! She's a beautiful little hen no matter what she is. 🥰

Should have gotten baby pics the other day when it was clean. I'll get some Sunday or Monday.

Also have you ever had issues with babies gaining weight? Or not eating much but still being very active?

I ask because I feel the keel bones on all of them even the ones I moved out to the adult bantam pen. ☹️

Very occasionally. Unfortunately, when they're still young and growing, it's hard to tell when they're actually too skinny versus their normal skinniness for their age. You should be able to feel the keel bone to an extent regardless, but it feels kind of sharp when they are underweight, if that makes sense? It's hard to describe and pretty hard to tell for sure if you don't have some that are a proper weight to compare. 😕

Has it still been very hot there? It's possible they're filling up on water and not eating as much as a result if so. It's hard to know what to do in such a situation. :hugs

Yes we are in a heat wave and hit or near hitting records right now. Humidity is also very high yet not much raining going on.
