Pipd's Peeps!

Heartbroken. I'm closing up coops right now and realized that Wyatt's flock was still outside and not acting right. Went into their coop to find our Judy Booty lying freshly dead by the roost. No injuries or anything, not sure what happened, but she has some kind of bloody mass hanging out of her vent that likely is the cause (unpleasant imagery). I'm so shocked and devastated. She was completely fine this morning! I put what I believe may have been her last egg under Morena just now, so hopefully we get at least one more Judy Booty baby. 🙁
Oh my goodness, I am so sorry Pipd :hugs Judy Booty was so precious, I'm glad you have a few chicks from her and hopefully one last one from the egg today. Oof, chickens can sure break our hearts. :hugs

Oh no! Sorry for your loss.

Sorry for the post and run. That was tough. So soon after we'd just been talking about such things, too. Ugh, I'm still feeling teary over losing my Judy booty. Her absolute beauty, that glorious fluff butt, and complete with the textbook Cochin attitude I've come to adore from these birds. She was not with us for long, but I will miss her so, so much. 💔

Assessing the situation last night and this morning, the conclusion I have come to is that it was some sort of freak happenstance. I believe she burst a blood vessel or something while laying her egg yesterday. Between the bloody mass hanging from her vent, how pale she was when I found her, and some signs of internal bleeding in her lower abdomen, I've concluded she must have just passed away from blood loss from the event. A one in a million sort of thing, one of those terrible reminders of how fragile life can be. 🙁

The weather is currently uncooperative to such efforts, but I'm hoping I can properly lay her to rest later this afternoon or evening.

Not wanting to skip posts from the previous page, here.

Maybe I should just make blue egg laying Phoenixs.

I'd love to follow along with that project if you did! :love

So, I found 3 bantam hens - one sebright and 2 oegbs. I asked why they were rehoming and they said because their child is going off to college. They aren't too far from me either. :wee
I found them on Craigslist and it took forever for them to get back to me. I have reached out regarding different chickens on CL and most never responded even though they only have an email contact. These posts seem to be older. I just wonder if it's a CL glitch, going to spam, people really don't want to get rid of their birds, or they already got it rid of them, but don't know how to remove the ad? 🙄 I don't really know, but CL is somewhat annoying.

Yay on the hens!! :yesss: Any ideas what colors they are? Definitely share pictures if you do get them!

I wonder about that as well. When people message me for my CL ads, even if it's just one I forgot to delete, I try to respond as soon as possible. I feel like a lot of, err, less tech-savvy older folks use CL, at least around here, so it might have a lot to do with that as well. I don't know, but it's truly exhausting at times.

She was so beautiful, I hope the weather cooperates so you can properly take care of her. You couldn't have done anything to save her either 🥺 I'm so sorry Pipd.

I'm so glad you have her chicks, I hope they are even more gorgeous than Judy Booty!

Judy was definitely beautiful. :hugs

One oegb is a bb red like my Ginger, the other I believe is considered "blue", and then a silver sebright. I'm just nervous as the whole process of quarantining and integrating is giving me anxiety.

Yesterday I cleaned out my shed and while doing so, I watched Rebel come up behind Cheddar and sneak attack while they were out in the yard. I was thinking, this is why Cheddar is always chasing him around in circles. 🤣
The other day, I went out to get the morning chores done and Rebel was standing with his foot up. Then, I noticed blood everywhere. He had somehow ripped his toenail completely off! I got him taken care of and put him in a crate to rest. But, once my coffee kicked in, I watched the camera video and Cheddar had been chasing him around the run - they were going round and round. Out of camera viewing, he must have gotten his toenail stuck somewhere. Because, then I could see blood running down the wood rail when he jumped up. I wonder if he thinks it's Cheddar's fault so he gave him a good ninja kick when he wasn't expecting it. 🤣

Here they are.
Apparently the sebright was giving the guy a hard time to catch. She's got a scrape on her nose. But, she is quite feisty - yelling at me when I was checking her over.
The bb red oegb was also yelling at me and chatting like she was telling me all about the trauma.
The blue one is pretty calm and mellow.
They seem pretty hungry as they all went to the food dish as soon as they were all in their pen.
