Pipd's Peeps!

Picture of the day number 90! I feel like I posted a picture pretty similar to this not that long ago... 🤔 But Findlay is molting now, so she's gone tailless. She could almost pass as a barred Cochin with the roundness of her booty right now, though those clean legs are a dead giveaway of course 🤭

Runners up are just a couple of sassy little Old English who didn't want their pictures taken this morning

Thank you! 😁 Now I'm working on the material for the next quiz and the test this week 😵‍💫

But more importantly, here's a late picture of the day, number 91! The Easter-hatched Judy pullet. She's turning out so pretty! :love

And a runner up of Rangi gently asking for my attention because I crouched to get the above picture 🤭

I love your little fawn boy!

🫤 I think I'm over crowded on birds. When I'm out here with them I see them eat but they are still not putting on the weight they should be.

I've checked for lice and mites and I've found none. Same with worms. So I'm upping the number of feeders I have and wetting crumble for them.

Just gave 30 cockerels away so I'm able to split another pen. Working on getting the partially done pen done and setting up frams for 4 8x8 hoopcoops to separate further. Also putting up some hens that are not for the project. Thinking of treating for worms and lice/mites anyways just incase.

I feel terrible that they're not gaining weight and are so thin. Could be bullying and keep away from food.

I have one who is in trouble and back to the broody pen. There were no signs until I found this.

One, I didn't know she was laying them up there. I knew my oegbs were up there, but had checked like 2 weeks ago to remove those eggs.
Two, there are more you can't see in the pic because of how I had to stand on the ladder to get the pic and I didn't want to fall to my death.
Three, I could have tried for a better pic, but thought that the feather was some creature's turd (and also thought I had a bigger problem). Once I looked at the pic to make sure it was safe to stick my hand over there, I realized it was a feather that belongs to my turd, Rebel. 🤣

Pipd probably has better advice than me, I tend to have the opposite problem... my hens are usually overweight

It's always a relief to move the extra boys out, so mayne that will help. The only other thing I can think of would be worms or cocci (or some other bacteria or parasite).

I think our second summer heat wave is also an issue. I'm going to add lights this weekend so they can if they want to eat after dark.

Sorry for the radio silence and lack of replies here, y'all! It's... been a week.

I had a lot of stress about exams and quizzes and such this week, many of which went well despite my worry. My sociology test... not so much, but I guess we'll see what the damage really is on that when that grade comes in 😬

But yesterday everything kind of screeched to a halt and my world has kind of been frozen in some kind of awful limbo since. My mom had some preliminary tests done that determined that she has cancer.

This is a tough one to post about. Her prognosis does not look bad at the moment, but we'll know more when she has it biopsied at the beginning of next month, of course. There's still that lingering shock and fear of the big C-word, though, and all of the millions of what ifs that go along with it. So I'm not having a great time at the moment with that. I'm trying to stay strong for her, of course. She already has enough to worry about as is. But it's so hard. My mom is very much one of my closest friends and probably my biggest supporter in everything I do. I really don't know what I'd do if I lose her. It's incredibly hard not to get emotional just typing this out.

Anyway, deep breaths. Keeping it together, keeping strong, keeping optimistic, and hoping for the best for now.

Let's bring things back around with some chicken tax for the week!

A sea of Cochins again! There's just so many of them out thereright now :th

Miss Ottilie, as fabulous as always despite having started into her molt :love

You-know-who being nosy again

Some birds patiently (?) waiting for their breakfast this morning. Featuring Izzy in the food pan, Harriet and Myrna behind her (and Amaretto way at the back right), and Freia pecking at the few pellets left from last night in the bottom right.

And lastly, an update on Georgia. Her pins are finally opening up! :love

Some birds do just feel scrawny until they're older and have filled out. If they're eating, I think it's likely they're okay. With as much rain as y'all have had down there, Tink's suggestion of it possibly being worms or coccidia is a good one. If you are a bit overcrowded, that can factor in such parasite infestations as well. Maybe try running a wormer through them if you haven't already and see if that helps?

The heat certainly could also be a factor! Extra light after dark is a good idea, it's generally cooler in the evening and at night so they might have a better appetite at that point. Hopefully they start filling out for you so you don't have to worry about them so much! :fl

Ooooh, I love her determination! And Rebel getting up there and encouraging them, tsk tsk!! What a crazy place for a nest! 🤣 It must just be the unseasonable warmth or something, some of my loons are suddenly broody this week, too :th
