Pipd's Peeps!

Pics
I hope school gets better next week it's probably hard to get back in the swing of things after being off all summer.

The pics are great love them all.  I wish my pics would turn out just half as good as your does.

Are you all grilling out today?  I haven't used my grill all summer I need to get another one.  My great granddaughter stayed all night last night.  She's a joy to have I call her our little sunshine.

Hope you have a great day and thanks for sharing all the pics.

It should be better this week. The reason last week was so travailous was because I had a LOT of homework to do. This week I don't have very much, and I'll likely finish it tomorrow and not have to do anything the rest of the week. :)

Yep, we grilled out. My sister is in culinary school and did all the cooking. Burgers, ribs, potato salad, baked beans, etc. And right now, she's making pie. :drool

Actually, today was supposed to be a rather stress-free day with my aunt visiting and us having all that food. Spur of the moment, though, my aunt let us know she was bringing a friend, so my stress level skyrocketed. I don't do well meeting people in person, and I especially don't do well meeting people for the first time at my own home. So I hid in the chicken coop with my girls when they got here. Unfortunately, my aunt wanted to show her friend the chickens right off, so I trapped myself. But it wasn't so bad. I had my girls with me and that was comforting. And you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals and how animals treat them. I quickly found myself okay with this person based on those two things, so the stress of the day dissipated quickly. The girls were curious and so was he, and I answered a lot of questions and picked up Marka so that he could see one of the Silkies up close. Those guys are always the most fascinating things to people who don't know much about chickens. He absolutely adored Crash, too, though who could blame him. ;)

You already sent a order!?im freaking out!i want more chicks.....I hope to get 12-15 chicks next year, but we might not get any :hit cause we want to go camping but want chicks!LOL

Yes, yes, yes! :weee I had asked around and apparently the best time to get on the waiting list for Sand Hill is around this time of year, so I went ahead and did it!

There's ALWAYS a way for chicken math to work! What if you go camping in early summer next year and get chicks afterward? Or something like that?

NEWS, NEWS, NEWS! I used the food coloring trick on Indigo and confirmed that she's been laying! AND this morning, I was cleaning the coop and witnessed Marka laying, too!! I had been wondering where all these tiny brown eggs were coming from! Reuben must carry a gene for brown eggs, because Margie's eggs are very light brown, almost a tinted white color, much lighter than her daughters' eggs! :D I'm so surprised, too, because they're both about a month and a half younger than Margie was when she started laying!

I also wanted to add that I've been thinking about this for a while, and I'm changing Gus's name. His nickname will still be Gus, because I really like that for him, but his full name is going to be Angus now, instead of August. I just wasn't as in love with 'August' for his name as I thought I was. :)

I'm happy the company turned out ok. Who knows you might start another chicken addiction with him. I know if I didn't have chickens and I saw a silky I would want one.

I hope school is easier this week for you and less homework. Have a great day and hug a chicken or Crash.

HHH, the weekend again! :th Another tough week done! I do have lots of homework this weekend, but I plan to take pictures at some point, probably tomorrow. The silkied Cochins passed quarantine tonight, so they get to join the flock in the morning, and I want pictures of them where they're out and able to really stretch their wings!! :celebrate With a fence between them and the big girls, I should add--I'm definitely not throwing these babies right out into the fray with that set of ruffians!

Not much going on with the chickens lately, other than more of them going into molt as the season changes. I had a nice discussion about chickens and eggs today with a waitress at lunch between classes. She was talking about how brown eggs are so much better than white for baking, so I had to inform her that the shell color makes no difference to the taste, and the diet of the bird is why some eggs are richer or more flavorful. Then I told her that my flock produces brown, white, blue, and green eggs, and she was completely baffled! She wants to see some blue and green eggs the next time I eat there--not sure how well that will go over in a restaurant, but I'm willing to oblige. :D

Silkied Cochin pictures, as promised! They're in the lower part of the coop, where the babies were when they moved out into the coop. They spent most of their time all grouped together getting used to their new surroundings, so it's not many pictures, but here are the good ones I got:

Little miss Cordelia:

1000

Donna looking sassy

1000

Gus-Gus, trying to look as manly as possible for the older ladies

1000

Roscoe, the most uncooperative little rascal for pictures! :rant

1000

Gus has a problem with personal space. Judging by Cordelia's face, she's not enjoying his presence.

1000

Roscoe has wings!!

1000

Cordelia, looking up at me mid-preen. :love What a sweetie!

1000

A thoughtful look from Roscoe

And Donna's fluffy behind.

They are absolutely gorgeous. Are you going to let them hatch eggs when they get old enough?

She's going to be shocked when she sees those blue and green eggs. I was hopeing I would get a blue and green egg layer but I got two green egg layers.

I thought we were going to get a severe storm someone from the floyd co. weather called with the warning. We got about five minutes of rain and that was it. We can sure use the rain it's been awfully dry here.

Are the chickens enjoying their new porch? Are you going to put pine down on the porch?

Enjoy your day and thank you so much for sharing the gorgeous pics.

X2 what patty hen said.

Oh she must be so shocked!i got my face painted as a chicken once and the girl looked at me as if I had three heads.she said,"mom?how do you paint a chicken?"she asked.her mother said,"they are white with a red thing under here chin, a yellow beak and red legs and feet".i was so puzzled.i kept my mouth shut cause I probly would have confused her,LOL!

Beautiful little babies!

I definitely will hatch from them in the future! Just, probably not next year since I'm already getting straight run chicks in the spring. But I was thinking about that just the other day! If I put Indigo and Gus together, I could get pure black Silkie mixes with silkied feathers! :D Usually Silkie mixes have regular feathers because the silkie gene is recessive.

Speaking of Indigo, she's going broody for the first time at the ripe old age of 6 months--a full month and a half earlier than her mom did!

I have three blue eggers so far, my Legbar, Poppy, and the white Easter-egger twins, Wynne and Mako. Wynne and Mako lay pale blue eggs that are rather unremarkable on their own, but Poppy lays a pretty blue! I'm hoping that Izzy's egg color rivals that, and who knows what Endymion will produce, but that's part of the excitement with Easter-eggers! :D And then Cressida and Maggie lay olive-green eggs--not like the dark olive eggs that people get from Marans mixes, but definitely an olive color. And Merlin, who is an infrequent layer at her age, lays a nice green egg. :) I have all sorts of brown and white shades now, but I'm missing the dark chocolate brown eggs, which next year's Marans will hopefully produce!

I love the deck! I love that the girls aren't cramped in their coop until I get up, and I love that they have a safe place to be when I have to leave early in the morning, and for later this winter when the leaves are down and they don't have as much natural cover. The girls, on the other hand, are over it. First thing in the morning, they're complaining wanting to get out to their yard to scratch and peck. I do plan to put shavings down out there this winter, but for now, it's bare wood.

And I have to laugh about the white chickens thing. I can't believe how little people know about what is not only the most populous bird species in the world, but possibly also the most abundant vertebrate species on the planet! My niece and nephew got this matching game with animals, and it has a rooter and a hen pair in it to match. The hen pretty much looks like a pigeon because they didn't give her a comb or wattles. Because obviously, only roosters have combs and wattles. :he

Anyway, I'd probably better get back to homework. Physics homework has taken me 5 hours so far, and I've only done about half of the 11 problems. :th And here I thought, with so few problems, that I would get it all done yesterday...

Gus and Indigo would make some beautiful babies. I wonder if they would look more silkie then cochan.

Good luck with your homework. It must be awfully hard problems to take that long.

Indigo is broody already oh no. She is going to be broody constantly now. Do you have a broody breaker cage? You don't even need an incubater if you have a silkie hen.

How is Crash doing? Is she laying regular now and no soft eggs? I would love to see a pic of her when you have the time.

Have a nice day .

Yeah, that homework was ridiculous. My Physics instructor flat out said he makes it hard. I don't know what the point is of making it so difficult, sigh... But oh, well. I'm kind of bracing myself because my first Physics exam is a week from Friday. :/ I'll be spending the weekend practicing as much as possible! Organic chem hasn't been bad until today, when we started into nomenclature, as in how organic chemicals are named. Holy cow, that's a lot to remember! :th

Yep, I have broody busters, and plenty of them. Marge is broody at the moment. Indi gave up on that pretty quick, but I'm sure it won't be the last time she gets that idea in her little head.

Crashie's a squirt. She's out of laying season now, no eggs to worry about. Apparently, in Crashie's brain, that means she has to make up for that by being EXTRA LOUD. I'll see about getting pictures of her soon. Friday is picture day for the youngsters outside, so I can grab a few pictures of her, too, if I remember. :)

ETA: Oh yeah, and I updated my 100 Pictures of my Flock page again, so all the pictures up to the ones of the silkied Cochins posted above are on there now. 60 / 100 themes checked and around 82 pictures total on the page! Not sure if I'll get all the themes checked before the end of the year, but I'm thinking I'll easily get to 100 pictures on the page at this rate.
