Oh wow the pics are beautiful. Your chickens are so pretty even if they did have a bit of a scowl.

I'm sorry to hear Cordy is not any better. You are a good chicken momma and have done your best to get her better. Bless your heart for all your efforts.

Good luck on your final exam I'm sure you will do great. Thanks so much for sharing the pics with us. They make my day and your chickens are gorgeous.

A few more pictures today. We got snow, which wasn't supposed to stick. Well, we're at about an inch of accumulation now, so... Anyway, the girls always have good reactions to snow, so I thought, why not? And I went out with the camera again.

This is all they want to do when there's snow on the ground.

It always astonishes me to see Umru next to other birds in the flock. In this case, here he is by Ihi. (This was just moments before Ihi went after Umru, by the way--yes, you read that right, Ihi went after Umru She's a brave one.)

Gorgeous pics of your flock. It doesn't look like they were to impressed with the snow. Mine are the same way they don't want to touch it. The chickens act like you can control the weather and make the snow go away.

We haven't had any snow yet I guess it's not been as cold here since we are further south then you are.

Yup, it's getting pretty cold up here. It's been getting below freezing at night, sometimes into the 20's. This morning, there was a thin layer of ice on all the waterers! I guess that means winter is here. Boo! The girls seem fine, though. We're still on lockdown for the hawk, and with the weather, I may just keep them on lockdown until the spring.



How has Goldie been doing, Pattyhen? Sadly, my little patient, Cordelia, has left us. I knew she was on her way out yesterday because she was in the same exact spot when I got home from class as before I left. She was shivering and tucking her face in her feathers, even though she was in my room at ~70 degrees. I set her up next to a heat plate on its side so that she could warm up a bit. By the time I went to bed a few hours later, she had passed. Donna was sitting by her like she always did, though she wasn't snuggled up against her like usual. She was pretty calm as I took Cordy's remains away, so she must have known what happened.

I brought Roscoe inside to be with Donna so she's not alone. My mom and I have pretty much decided that we're going to hatch some eggs from them soon. I would hate to lose another one of them and not have any way of getting more Silkied Cochins. I've never had winter chicks, but I figure I have them inside anyway--what's a few more? I may also let one of the Silkie girls outside have a couple eggs, since the three of them have been taking turns broodying. Might as well put them to work.

I'm so sorry for the loss of Cordy. (((((((((hugs)))))))))) She is in a better now and and I'm sure she has many friends.

Goldie is doing great. We had to trim her beak the other day. She sure didn't like that. She is the only chicken I have had that has a beak that needs trimming. I knew it was getting to long when I brought her in but I wanted to wait until she got better. She pouted for several days days but I think she has forgotten it now.

We are suppose to get some snow Sunday. I don't like winter at all. I much prefer the other seasons. Our back porch doesn't have a hand railing and it's a little tricky to get down the steps when it snows or ices.

I'm glad your going to try and hatch some of Donna and Roscoes babies. They are so pretty and they would have some cute chicks. Let me know how that is going. I wish you luck on that.

Aw, well I'm glad she's okay, even if she thinks she's been so abused.

Yikes, be safe! We've been getting snowglobe-like snow off and on for a few days up here, but it's all blowing away and none of it's been sticking. The temps have been in the 20's for the past few days, though, sigh. Lots of ice breaking and many, many, many complaints from the girls.


The ground is frozen, so my brother cremated Cordelia. My sweet little munchkin... Donna and Roscoe have been together now for a few days, so I'm going to crack open one of her eggs today and see if it's fertile. Roscoe has not exactly been the most graceful with Donna, so, uh... We'll see. If her eggs are fertile, though, then I'm going to start gathering them up...

Well, we got a few inches of snow overnight, and it's still going. :/ The girls are NOT going outside, thank you very much! I had to clean the coop today, which is a LOT harder with 39 chicken bodies in the way, and then I sat out with them for a while in the clean shavings. This allowed me to discover a draft in the coop. I believe it's from having the coop open to the deck, allowing a cross breeze from the windows in the lower part of the coop and across the perch area. I'm thinking I'm either going to have to start closing the coop doors at night again or staple up some feed bags strategically to block the breeze from the perches. Anyway, Elly, Freema, and I had a nice sit down together and talked about the weather and how abused they are. Freema, like always, had many complaints.


I baked chocolate cake mix cookies yesterday (which, by the way, turned out amazing!) and while I was at it, I checked to see if Donna's eggs were fertile. The older egg from her was not, and I only had one other at the time. I debated for a bit, but decided I would rather be sure they were fertile before setting them, so I cracked open the second one. Sure enough--bullseye!--meaning her eggs should all be fertile for a while even if I take Roscoe out of there! She laid an egg early this morning, and I will be setting that and the rest her eggs aside for the rest of the week! Little munchkins to come soon!!

Whoa-ho-ho, three posts in a row! We got a ton of snow today, and I know this because I broke my back getting it off tarps and such to prevent pens from collapsing. It's feeling like it's raining now, so tomorrow might get ugly. I have harp and I need to drop off the last of my homework, so I'll have to go into town in this. Hopefully it's not as bad as it seems like it will be...

In other news, looks like Lydda laid her first egg today! No pictures of her or her egg, but I did take a few pictures of the flock today during the snow storm, long before I even realized there was a new egg out there!

Umru being a dope. I had shelter all set up for him, but he spent the morning standing on this crate by the deck, being slowly covered in snow. I set up another shelter by the deck, thinking he would use it because it was closer to the flock, but he still stood out in the snow all day. The big dummy!

Indigo. This is the face of a bird who clearly blames me for the weather. "What have you got to say for yourself?!"
