Pipd's Peeps!

She's doing great! I haven't seen any signs of anyone picking on her or anything, and I even saw her sass one of the other birds a couple days ago. 🤭 A bit of the scabbing closer to her eye and ear has started falling off, so her face is looking a bit more normal as well. I'll see about getting updated pictures of her face today to show her progress. 🥰
Nora's getting her sass back, that's good 😊

Nora update pictures! I've quoted all of her past pictures so that her progress since the day I found her injured can be seen. 🥰

Starting with the non-injury side:

Today, looking completely back to normal and well colored again on that side:

The injury side (I'll leave the earlier pictures of this side in spoilers as before) :

Today, still looking a bit puffy, but better color, and the scabbing is starting to flake off:

And some angy Nora, too, because I had to pick her up to get those update pictures and I didn't ask her permission first. 🤭 What a sassy little thing she is!

A brief Nora update that I definitely did not forget to post here. 😅 I did some evaluating on my Cochin pullets yesterday and the day before, and I took pictures of them while I did. Nora was among them, of course. I didn't get any pictures of her good side, but here is the injury side, looking better still than last time! :love

As far as evaluation goes, she's a bit young yet to fully evaluate, I think, but she has a lot of potential. So it's possible Nora will be among my breeders for the year come next month. 🥰

I also got a picture of Duckling!

Those of you newer to the thread probably won't have seen the post that earned Duckling her name. Back in the summertime, when she was still a scrawny little pullet, she squeezed her way through the fence into the pen that my duck, Crash, lives in and fell into her swimming pool. Fortunately, the water was only chest deep for her at the time, so she did not drown, but she was stuck in there for a while, likely hours, and was very, very chilled when I found her. I honestly did not think she would pull through. But, a night in the house being pampered and warmed up, and Duckling was back to her old self. ❤️

And here's little Ivy, too :love She was named by a friend.

And these pullets are all most likely going to be kept as well, but are not yet named. Plus there are several more pullets that are younger so I didn't bother grabbing them to evaluate or take pictures, but may or may not be kept... I've got a lot of names to figure out still 😅

Ugh, they're gorgeous, Pipd :love :love :love . I think I remember Duckling! Nora is looking so good, I would not have guessed that I was looking at her "bad" side, it looks so much better!

Those are GORGEOUS! Ok, I don't know the standard but those look amazing to me! Nora is really looking improved, sweet little thing :love

I think this is my favorite, so beautiful! This is definitely a Big Booty Judy right there. Now you have me questioning why I'm raising silkies and not silkied cochins 🤔

Aww, thank you! I get such a sense of pride seeing how well they're growing out. These are the birds that I produced, through choices I made in birds to pair up last year. :love It's hard to put into words how good that feels, you know? Granted, last year was year 1 of me actually breeding them, so most of the credit for that goes to the farm I got my breeding stock from, but still!

Technically they should be like 18 months old or so before breeding, old enough that they've really filled out and any glaring flaws would have become evident for me to avoid. However, I'm still working on building up my breeding pens, so I bred younger birds last year and will be as well for this year and possibly next. I'm finding that they go through an awkward phase where they're hard to judge until around 9-10 months of age, so that's probably going to be my minimum age for the time being. 🙂

They are, I really love them! :love I'm also really happy at how well Nora is getting along out there! You can probably tell by the look on her face in that picture, but she was once again not pleased with me for picking her up without her permission. 🤭

If you ever decide you need some silkied Cochins in your life, just let me know. I can hook you up. ;)

Nora is definitely a diva and you must have her permission to even look at her 🤣

I'm so excited to see my first hatch grow out, and I 100% know they won't be perfect as I'm breeding some unknowns, so I can only imagine how amazing the feeling you're having to see your hardwork and dedication paying off! I can't wait for my "better" silkies to start grow up so I can start making my breeding choices. Way to go Pipd, this is awesome!

Hmm... silkied cochin eggies you say!?!?!?! once I get my breeding plans figured out, I might just need to buy some from you next year :celebrate

I was pretty proud of myself for deciding to only do silkies, Swedish Flower Hens and some Ermines, but last night driving home from dropping some hatching eggs off with a lady, my hubby starts talking about how cute the bantams are that a local breeder has. So I told him I was trying to be responsible and had decided not to get more bantam eggs (I just have the 2 chicks, I was going to leave it at that) but he wants them, so I said I don't mind getting more, I was just trying to keep my flock and breeding plans reasonable 🤣 well, I tried, now it seems we'll be adding the Ameraucana bantams and D'uccles to the mix. I mean, not that I mind. So, maybe he won't notice if I slip a few silkied cochins in there :wee

The offspring look amazing, you're obviously very passionate about this breed and variety, and it shows! I know exactly what you've mean. Although I'm very early in my breeding programme(s), so I have yet to make any selections, I understand the feeling. Seeing your parent choices producing very good offspring is sooo rewarding! Can't wait to see what my serama produce! Wow, I wouldn't have thought it took 18 months! My guess was around ten months to a year as well. I guess it can be a breed thing as well, my Tsouloufates have the awkward stage way younger, and are fully developed by 7 months old. The serama I haven't had a while, but I think they're generally a really fast maturing breed. Side note, I so want some of your silkied cochins! Other than possibly a single silkied serama, this is the only silkied bird I'd like to have right now. I'd like to get some cochins in general, I really love the breed. My pens are full, however, so not an option for the foreseeable future
