Lucky Ghost did re-aferm why Sultan will always have a place in the flocks. He's such a good boy protector of hens and good boy cockerels that are up and coming.

I was thinking he sounded like a great guy based on what you said!! Definitely a keeper!

He actually looked for me at put up time so I hope he felt better that he wasn't alone and with me at the time.

Picture of the day 57. I stood out there for a bit deciding who to take a picture of, trying to keep things fresh, and then I saw Ida mosey by. I hardly get any pictures of her, so I thought she would be the perfect subject today! Well, she reminded me of why it is I don't take her picture often--she is SO hard to get a picture of!!

In trying to get a picture of her, a group of the silkied Cochins came over to beg for grapes. We have wild grape vines all over in the chicken yard area and the grapes are starting to ripen, so I've plucked hand fulls of them to toss down. The birds remember this, of course, and beg for grapes any time I go near the vines. This is Pete by the log (he, of course, chirped with excitement when I walked over here and drew the girls in), with Coco, Ivy, Janice, and unnamed hen in a line next to him, waiting patiently for their offering of grapes. Look at those faces, how do you say no to that?

And Ida? This was the best I got of her as she zipped away from me along the fence in the background.

Chickens are so funny. Mine line up like that too in the morning to get their food (and in the afternoon to get a treat). They look at me like, "Hey lady, can't you see we're starving?"

Speaking of... When I go out to the run to clean (empty duck swim water and freshen up the coops), I will play a podcast. As soon as the ducks hear it (as they don't see me right away), they start quacking up a storm because they know it's free time in the yard. They jump and flap and seem so joyous. It's just so cute to see.
In comparison, the chickens are standing along their fence waiting to be let out with the same contempt as they have for me when waiting for food. "Hurry up old lady."

The only way to say no to those faces is if you are a cruel, heartless, unloving, awful person

This is how my one grow out coop is now forcing me to make them a bowl of mash every morning. I have a wry neck cockerel that I was worried wasn't getting enough to eat, so the mash started. He's improving but skipping breakfast mash is NOT an option, and they make this very clear to me.

Oh goodness, yes, chickens are in a constant state of starvation! You'd think when I put the feed down every morning that they hadn't seen any in weeks!

Mine sure get excited for free-range time! And then I open the door and they all pile out the door and waddle at high speed out into the woods! The Cochins particularly are so funny to see racing along out there because they don't even look like they bend their knees while running, they just stiff-leg it They're pretty speedy for puffballs that sure don't look very aerodynamic!

Sounds kind of like a couple of my girls with roost time! I know they can fly up to roost, they've done it before, but apparently I've made the mistake of helping them along some nights so now Peanut Butter and Juniper just expect me to lift them to the roosts and refuse to fly up on their own because they know I'll do the hard work for them. Rotten girls!

Picture of the day 58! Birch just posed so well this morning, I have to give it to him.

Going around the water dish from the left, this is Maisie, Georgia, Margot, Morena, Wyatt in the back, Inara, the little Judy Booty pullet, Zoe, and the little non-Judy-booty cockerel.

Picture of the day 59! Ida may be stubborn, but I'm determined when I set my mind to something. Got her!

For a runner up, it's Wyatt's flock again. They always line up for some greens when I open the door to come in. Left to right, this is Morena, Georgia, Inara, Wyatt, and Zoe. Morena and Inara are still co-mamaing, but the babies haven't figured out the salad bar yet and are a bit shy of me, so they were hanging back out of frame.

I've been working on devising a permanent grazing frame for these pens and the corner coop pen so that they have more access to greens since those pens can't free-range. Will let y'all know how that works out if I do figure out a plan I like for that!

Whelp, guess who decided it was broody time? Yup, Ivy. She's so young too. I've got my work cut out with this one. She doesn't like the broody jail, but she does like the meal service for 1.
