Pipd's Peeps!

She got a name! That's awesome, I love it! And she's beautiful!

Sorry for not posting much, it's gotten pretty busy around here with 32 new little floofs and fruit harvest time!

Here's some funky little fuzzy feet, lobster claw on the one side.

Such fluffiness. 🥰
Those claws are on the same digit (the inside back digit). Do you know if that is where it usually occurs? I'm just curious.

I was expecting her to be a satin, but no signs of that yet. Although her sibling looked silkie last night and is definitely a satin this evening 🤣

For the silkies with genetics from the one breeder I got eggs from, this has popped up a few times, she has 2 toes close together on one foot and then a thicker single toe with 2 nails on the other. I hope to have this weeded out in a few more generations. I'm working with what I've got right now, but I'll be replacing birds as I get better ones.

I just tucked everyone in and took a few pics. I was wrong. She's got one set of lobster claws on each foot. She also has a weird toenail sticking up out of her toe I circled the toe which shows her regular toe nail and then one tiny one sticking up. When I noticed it, I thought she somehow had ripped her toenail apart. So tried to trim it a little and it bled. Then, I noticed it's actually coming out of the toe.
It was a little awkward trying to take pics while holding her and getting the phone in the right postition. I think she was a bit grumpy with me as well. 😆 So, this is the best pics that I could get right now.

I've never seen it on a front toe! Now I see what you mean!!! No, I've just seen the extra nail on those 4th and 5th toes. Even on my funky toed TSC silkies, it was just funky 4th and 5th toes.

I still can't get over how hairy her little feet are 🥰

Oh wow, she's got some really weird feet!! I love her face in that last picture! :love

Yeah, I agree, generally the gene causes duplication of the hind toes and can sometimes get a bit crazy with duplication. I was just reading something yesterday or the day before about that the gene can also sometimes impact other parts of the body, like the example shown was partially duplicated wattles on a clean-faced Silkie rooster

It's not super common or anything, but I have seen where an extra nail has grown on the side of one of the front toes before. Not on any of my birds, but they get posted occasionally on BYC.

Picture of the day 74! Ottilie has been dedicatedly laying her eggs in the nest box that the broody-raised chicks were hatched and reared in, the one they sleep and poop in every night. I tried to discourage this, but she's more stubborn than I am, so I've resigned myself. At least it's still in the coop and not hidden out in the woods somewhere!

Anyway, here's Otter looking innocently up at me with said nest in the background. Perfectly angelic, this one

For a runner up, this is another unnamed non-keeper hen, but this poor gal is having such a rough molt, the poor baby. Look at those feet! 😬

Only 2 more days before the semester starts
sweat wipe brow.gif
I'm not sure how busy I'll be right at the beginning, but I'm thinking once things really pick up that I'll switch over from my picture of the day to a chicken tax system kind of like I see some other threads do. Basically, whenever I post I'll try to provide at least one picture as my chicken tax. 🤭 We'll see how that works out!

Love him!! 😍 He has some beautiful iridescence to him! I'm glad he at least got a chance to enjoy himself yesterday.

No luck rehoming Cheddar yet? I haven't had much luck with any of my boys, either. I have a set going up to the processors in about a week because I just have too many boys to keep around any longer. :hmm It sucks, but they keep reminding me why I have to get it done (by being buttheads  ) and I know it'll be a lot more peaceful for me and the rest of my birds once they've been removed.

Anyway, here's my picture of the day, up to 75 now! Two of the three Easter pullets sitting on the makeshift perch I put together for the Cochin girls to sleep on since most of them won't go to the actual roosts. The third Easter pullet was standing to the left, that black blob you can just barely see at the left edge behind the perch. Judy Easter pullet is the one on the left with her neck pulled in.

He is handsome. But, I'm partial to him. ❤️

No luck with Cheddar. But, he's definitely pet quality and I find most don't want pets but breeders if they get roosters. I am worried about winter though due to Rebel being perched most of the day. He does come down to the run once in awhile even when Cheddar's there.

Sorry to hear that your guys have to be processed. :hugs

I really can't spot the 3rd pullet in your photo. 🤣

OEGBs are pretty great roosters in my experience. A bit big for their britches sometimes, but pretty cool little guys anyway :love

Yeah, and it seems like bantam roosters are especially hard to place. Hopefully someone comes around who wants the little guy. :hugs

It's always tough to have them processed... but the peace in my flock is always so nice once it's over with, even if I feel guilty for a while still. 🥺

She's pretty hard to spot! She's part of the black blob in the background here, but part of it is also her shadow and the shadow of the perch setup, so it doesn't end up being very apparent that there's a bird there at all. 🤭
