I have an egg in the incubator right now that had a totally normal looking, correctly located air cell at lockdown. I just saw that at some point in the last 5 hours, it pipped at the wrong end of the egg. The outer membrane was visible but was white and looked unbroken. I couldn't see any movement or hear any cheeping, so I got the bathroom nice and steamy and brought the egg in to pick a bit of shell away from the pip and tear a little hole in the outer membrane to make sure it was actually getting air. What I could see under the white membrane looked very wet/shiny and the beak wasn't visible. I could hear and feel a faint sort of scratching going on inside the egg so I moistened the membrane and stuck it back in the incubator. Is there anything else I can do at this point to improve its odds?

Often they do just fine on there own even in this situation ...
However, here is a great article on when and how to assist. Just in case.;)

Oh yes, I've read that very thoroughly :D I have only had to assist one before this and that guide was a huge help. I guess I'm thrown off because this one's beak is not visible at its pip hole so I'm not sure if it's actually able to breathe.

Hmmm... was there any bleeding when you pealed back the shell?
Can you post a pic?
@WVduckchick can you help here?

I'm less concerned about it for now but will give a detailed update for any future people who end up in the same situation and find this :)

There was the tiniest bit of blood that stained the outer membrane but it wasn't actively bleeding. After looking at more pictures, I decided that wetness I was seeing after making the little outer membrane hole was just the inner membrane. There hadn't been any movement or sounds since I put it back in the incubator. I was worried that since the inner membrane wasn't actually broken and it had spent all this energy breaking the shell at the wrong end without actually getting through the membranes, AND it now wasn't even with its beak at the hole anymore, it could maybe be in trouble. Took it back into the steamy bathroom to try to figure out what was going on. It started moving a little and I saw the tiniest glimpse of what looked like the tip of the beak before it disappeared again. I chipped away more shell in the direction I saw the beak disappear and peeled away a little more outer membrane. It then made the tiniest hole in the inner membrane all on its own :) Dampened things and stuck it back in the incubator with some additional sponges to increase the humidity even more.
