I have a turkey egg that pipped this morning. It's beak is out, but it hasn't made any progress for the past 6 hrs, not even moved. I know it's still alive because I can see it's beak moving like it's breathing. I'm worried that maybe there's not enough room in the egg for it to move around some. When should I seriously think of helping it out?

My chicken eggs began hatching yesterday and there are still a few coming out now. It's my first time round, but from what I have seen, they pip through the shell and then take a rest before doing the unzipping. For some of mine, that rest period lasted for like 8 hours or more. When they decided to come out, however, they got serious and the unzipping part went quite quickly... like half an hour... FOR MOST OF THEM... a few have stopped for a rest before the final break. I now have 25 hatched.

Chicks can take 24+ hours to start zipping after the first pip. For our turkeys, it was 36 hours. From what I read, the initial pip stimulates yolk absorbtion and allows the chick to breath on it's own. Give it time, it will come. Just make sure your humidity is good and don't open the bator! Good luck!
