pips and zip and LOTS of pics... Lockdown.......Hatch date 8/28

Ducky! That's adorable...I love it.

I went outside to check on my little Sammie, and she had kicked the blue egg out. It was next to her, and cool to the touch so it must have been out for hours...maybe all night. I brought it in the house and candled it...I just see a small blob, most of the egg is clear

I want to open it up, but I'm skeeeered. I know it's going to be disgusting... The good thing is it doesn't smell, from the outside anyways, who knows if/when I open it up...

I only have a bator but I would let her alone. She knows what to do. Can I ask why did you take her off the nest? Couldn't she get off her self? I'm just wondering because I thought you didn't have to do anything when you have a broody. I've never had one.

I'm on lock down. 12 silkies eggs and all are still doing good.

I pick her up off the nest because she's in a "cage". She would probably go into the run herself if she could, but since I have her caged she can't get out unless I let her out. I had to cage her because I was having too many problems with the other hens wanting to lay eggs in her nest and eating her food, and I was afraid the other hens would break the eggs. Plus, when the babies hatch they'll need a safe place.

I've read many other people doing the same thing...taking them off the nest once a day. I've also heard of broodies dying on the nest because they won't get up by themselves to eat and drink, but I'm sure that's rare and only in extreme cases. They go into such a "trance"...they have no purpose in life but to sit there and protect their babies, even if it's not healthy for them.
