Plans for DIY Water System - Heated, 5 Gallons

Use an 11/32 drill bit and leave 2 - 3 threads showing, do not tighten them down all the way. You don't need anything on the threads to seal them, with the proper size hole. I had a flower pot tray under the waterer inside the coop, to catch drips when they used it, not because the nipples leak. It kept the bedding dry.

Here's drawing and pix of our system. Pictures with chicken wire are taken from storage side where the blue camping jug is. Jug was already threaded on lid for a spigot so just used a brass fitting to make a valve.

I love the horizontal nipples but there are touchy to install. The ones on flat sided recepticles don't leak but ones on pvc needed some JB Weld to stop leaking. This system live through frigid cold this year of 18 degrees below outside coop. Water was toasty 68 degrees .

If you use a Tee and a plug at each point on the pipe you might have better luck and not need JB Weld.

How did you circulate the water and what did you heat it with?

We had an old fountain pump never imagining it would be powerful enough to move through loop, but it was. Problem was it wiggles it's way out of outlet so we put a brick in jug to stabilize it . The heater was just a medium size aquarium heater that goes from 68 to 90 degrees via a dial. . I think it was listed for 30 gallon aquarium.
