plants for my run

@Ashdoes, the thing about wisteria seed pods is that they "pop"when they are ripe, throwing seeds everywhere. You would have to prune the pods before they ripen. They are gorgeous plants, but sometimes more trouble to maintain than you would think. I don't want to discourage you, though. I just don't want you to end up with any unpleasant surprises.

@ lavender, that sounds like a great idea. You could plant the lettuce in a short bed and cover it with the chicken wire so the chickens can eat it as it grows up through the wire. I may have to use that idea! :)

caribear thanks ogot the idea because my two hybrid chicken are in their old coop at the moment right next to veg garden and they kept poking beaks through trying to get to lettuce

I have successfully planted raspberry suckers in my run along the inside of fence. While they were getting established I wrapped a length of loose fencing around the area to keep the girls out. Now they are filling in and the the girls are using them for shade and cover. I just got a new book Free Range Chicken Gardens by Jessie Bloom. She recommends placing a ring of rocks around the base of plants/shrubs while they are getting established. I tried it with some daylillies that kept getting scratched up and it worked like a charm. For seedlings she recommends placing a length of chicken wire flat over your soil and the seedling will grow up through it without being scratched. Good book - great pictures. My library has it, but I had to buy it
