That's not working..Definitely not a deep litter practice and that can't be started in freezing temps..

what can i do now?

Add more wood chips to your run. Do you have any fallen leaves? add them also. Add shredded paper. UP that carbon content as much as you can. If you can remove some of soiled bedding, that might help - but it will help to keep adding clean bedding.

Deep bedding (which is what you've been doing) is not the same as deep litter and cannot compost poop the way deep litter can. If you're intending to do deep bedding then yes you need to plan to clean out the run regularly to keep things under control. With your limited run space it might be difficult to put in a true deep litter system that functions well enough to take care of the poop on its own.

I don't do a true deep litter either but what I have works for my set up. I personally do not use any wood shavings in the litter. I use aged chunky wood chips as a base to allow for drainage, and then add in gathered plant materials as they become available. Right now it's a ton of dried leaves, and I save extra dried leaves for use year round. Towards summer, there'll be short grass clippings to mix in. Garden trimmings make up the rest.
