I was thinking of putting a plastic sheet underneath the wood shavings to protect the cardboard box from water/urine. Is this dangerous in any way for the chicks?

No.............. I do the same thing and it helps with cleaning the brooder each day, just lift it out, toss the bad in with the good. it works well and a good idea.

I do something similar with a brown paper grocery bag. Then I toss the bag if it seems very soiled and add a new one.

It's what I do as well.

Just keep at least an inch of shavings on top of it so it won't be too slick for them to walk on.
