I see many saying they cover the south and west sides or the north and west sides. I'm really not sure which way the wind blows. I don't think I've ever really paid attention to which way tge wind blows. I just figured a nor'easter was the way to think of it and covered most of the north and east.
So how does everyone else decide?

You can google the wind direction for most zip codes and find charts that will report at least monthly, if not weekly or daily for each month of the year. Here is one for Seattle, where we get mostly wind from the south.

I decided based on where my coop is in relation to my privacy fence. It is tall enough and close enough to the coop to block weather that comes in from the east. The south of my run is where it connects to my coop. I just covered up the west because it doesn't have protection. I left the north open because the door is there and because it's far enough from the coop that I figured the birds would have plenty of room to peck and scratch without getting wet (no snow here - but rain is expected for the next two weeks straight).

I live in Kansas and here the wind blows every direction so I cover all 4 sides. The eaves in the roof are left open and allow for plenty of air flow and ventilation.

First let me say this about the Nor'easters - it seems the wind has a mind of it's own and will blow from where ever. My coop is in the middle of a gentle slope with my little woods on the east I thought this would be a buffer for the winds, but not so much. I've been fascinated by how all your coops are so neat and tidy and wrapped so well for the winter. I figured out why my heavy plastic shower curtains were whipping in the winds. The rope I used to hold them against the coop sides were stretching. I picked up some bungee cords and attached them to the rope so when the rope stretched the bungee would take up the slack. Hopefully that will solve the problem. Here's a picture. Please don't laugh, I'm 67 and vertically challenged. And thank you all for your kind advice.

First let me say this about the Nor'easters - it seems the wind has a mind of it's own and will blow from where ever. My coop is in the middle of a gentle slope with my little woods on the east I thought this would be a buffer for the winds, but not so much. I've been fascinated by how all your coops are so neat and tidy and wrapped so well for the winter. I figured out why my heavy plastic shower curtains were whipping in the winds. The rope I used to hold them against the coop sides were stretching. I picked up some bungee cords and attached them to the rope so when the rope stretched the bungee would take up the slack. Thank you. I added a couple of old flower pots loaded with dirt to hold them at the bottom. And when it stops raining I'll be putting up some holiday decorations. Perhaps we should start another thread with pictures of our coops decked out for Christmas. Tis the season!

Update on bungee cord addition: It was windy yesterday, thankfully no rain, the bungee cords did the trick. No more shower curtains flapping the breeze. I strung some lights for holiday decorations, (totally solar).

I think I need to add wreath or bow. Happy Holidays!

Love the lights! I'm getting some bungee cords for mine too. My panels are a bit floppy also. Plus some of the staples pulled out last time we had a stiff wind. Staples are probably not a good idea, but it was all we could do quickly with the early low temps and snow. I've gotten so many good ideas from this thread!

Thank you. You can use rope between the bungee cords to cut cost a bit. Good luck!

I am expecting delivery today of some clear tarps from this company. One 6x8, one 6x10, one 6x20, and one 6x30. I was going to get shower curtains but this actually ended up costing a bit less. I'm going to use zip ties this year. I might buy the ball bungees they have next year. I'll be putting them up tomorrow.
