Play sand and chicks

Our chicks are 6 weeks old. Can we give them play sand in place of grit? Does it work the same or do they need special grit?

Depends what you are feeding them. If its the generic crumbles, you don't HAVE to give them grit though there's no harm giving it to them...assuming they don't just chow down on that. I would think having sand in the brooder would be fine more for the play part of it. I know there are people who use it in their brooders as the main substrate.

Exactly! I can about imagine the excitement if you were to hide some treats in the sand.
