Play toys in brooder

Well I'll be danged, chickie daycare.

Apparently, as with all things chicken, you can do whatever moves you. The whole toy thing seemed like they could care less, but there is always the exception to the rule. Give it a whirl and see what happens. You may have a chicken circus on your hands.

My 9 year old daughter put a clear rattle (with very colorful little plastic bits inside that make it rattle) They chicks loved -- the string. They pulled on it, fussed over it and tried every way possible to get the string off the rattle. I had helped my daughter tie it tightly, and the string was jute, so there wasn't any possibility of it coming loose & getting eaten.

We took out the rattle, and tied a few sticks onto it in a row, like a primitive mobile, and that was very amusing to them for a few days, too. We also gave them a plastic golf ball.

The most amusement they seem to get, though, is stale bread. They play a great game of Chicken Tackle when one gets a chunk in its beak and starts squealing & running.

THAT is worth watching! (Crickets are on the list next.)

I had my first batch in a shower stall. Plenty of wall space, so I propped a small boat ladder against the wall. They loved it.
I wouldn't go to Toys-R-Us for my chickens, though. Furthermore, I would TEASE any friend of mine that did!

Use what you've got.

Mine love it when I dangle a small piece of colourful yarn for them. I just stand there and hold it for them, and they all go nuts, its hilarious. I wouldn't leave it hanging there though, one of them would probably eat it, but it is an amusing game (for me anyway) to play with them. I tossed a crinkly, shiny cat toy in there, and it freaked them out. They all gathered around it and "cheep-cheeped" at it but no one was brave enough to touch it. Bunch of chickens. LOL

They also have some lengths of dowel to perch on, that are a hit. I think I will make them a cereal box "house" today, and see what happens....

I've had it suggested that I put a few marbles in there for them to peck at.

They are in a fenced enclosure with the bottom half of a plastic dog house inside, and they've started climbing all over it lately so I may put up a dowel for roosting and a little ladder ramp thing this weekend.

I like the idea of the paper tube as well though, might try that when the ground is a bit dryer.
