Playhouse at Walmart...possible convert?

I think it would be great for the overnight roosting spot for a few birds, but they'd have to have free range of a yard or an attached large run.

The coop part of my original tractor wasn't very big, and they didn't care because they only slept there...and then I discovered I needed a billion birds and that little thing just wouldn't work!

isn't it funny how chicken people are always thinking of ways to use stuff for chickens.lol i was asking my dh for his drywall mud box just last night. i told him it would make a great nesting box.lol

Oooh, thankythankyouthankyou!!

I finally got the ok from DH to buy a coop (he isn't keen on building one yet) and this should work better to modify than all those crazy-priced ones. I bet that toy box could be assembled to be a nest box... and maybe bench parts used as a roost? oooh, now I'm four sorts of excited.

Anyone interested in converting a wooden playhouse to a chicken coop should keep their eyes on the close-outs at the end of the season. Many folks (including myself) have scored brand-spanking new coops at Lowes marked down from $350 to $89. i was lucky to get the display model so i didn't have to put it together. i keep 13 banties in there, and it's big enough for them. If one had standards, i don't think you could squeeze more than 3 or 4 in. But it is well worth the wait to get such a huge discount.

square foot wise, if you had only 2 sq. feet per bird you could fit 8 in there. But that would be a tight squeeze and I would have to say to let them free roam all day and only to be in there at night. Why not take the money, buy wood and make your our. It's fun designing and building your own. Besides that stuff is never sturdy enough to last years. Not to mention the good feeling you get knowing YOU did it! (You should see my kids telling everyone that they did this part of the coop and this part. It's so neat.)

Our family has actually just started building our coop from some recycled materials. Neither of us have much building experience, but going for it anyway! I posted the link for anyone who might be interested in going this route. (I might have if had not already started our coop!)
