Somewhere inside, a bubble of hot frustration burned in Gemma's veins, an angry impulse that she had never felt before. Why was Layla keeping her from making friends? Why could Aspen go off and have a foal, and she was stuck here, lying in the grass, waiting for night when she would need to lie in the grass some more. The sensation only lasted for a moment, just a moment. In its wake, Gemma felt ashamed. Surely Layla knew what she was doing. There had to be a reason she was kept from her sister.
Suddenly she felt the colt sidle up next to her, and she lifted her muzzle curiously, sniffing. "Hi," she whispered, twisting her ears around so she could listen fully to the little colt.
"I know you love your sister, but you must listen to mommy now." Layla said sternly.
"Hewwo Mwommy!" He cried happily, nuzzling Gemma.
Gemma said nothing, not trusting herself to say the right words.
"Oh," she smiled excitedly. "A new brother!"
