"When did you see your mommy last? Before you saw me." she asked kindly, rising to her hooves with a weary groan.

"Oo aww Mwommy! I saw oo hewe!" He said quietly, prepared to bolt off if it wasn't really his mom.

"Gemma, please don't go anywhere." Layla sighed.

Shadow watched Gemma from a distance.

"What are you going to have me do?" she snapped in the direction of Layla's voice, frowning. "Sit here trying to calm a foal who obviously needs to find his mother? Is that what you want me to do?"

With a jerk of her head she turned back to the colt, giving a reassuring smile, trying to erase all her annoyance. "I'm afraid I'm not your mommy," she nuzzled him comfortingly, hoping he wouldn't run away. "I wish I could be, but I'm not. If you stay with me, I can help you find her."

"Of course! I didn't want you to be uncomfortable, though," He answered, looking up from the ground.

"I'm not mad right now... I just had a foal!" She said calmly.

Americus tentatively stepped toward the foal. "Hello, there," He smiled.

The colt bolted off, crying.

"Yes! Gemma, you have to stay with mommy, or you could get killed! So listen to me, and do what I say!" Layla yelled strictly.

Gemma whinnied after the foal in concern, but he was gone. She could no longer smell him or hear him, he had just vanished. Angrily she turned back to Layla, trying to keep her mouth shut but knowing that it wouldn't hold up for very long. There were a million things she wanted to say, most of which she found shameful and managed to stifle before they reached her lips. Her own thoughts scared her, and she was afraid to even utter a single word. Tears of frustration welled up, and she bolted, galloping wildly into the forest beyond. She bumped into a tree or two, and tripped over a rock she wasn't familiar with, but she kept running. She couldn't stop. Not until she was far, far away.

"Gemma! Please come back!" Layla called, running after her.

Shadow waited for Gemma to run, before stepping in. "Gemma!" She called softly.

"Almost too cute," Americus replied softly.
