"But that doesn't matter to me, Gemma! You have to listen to me, which you didn't! I'm glad you're making friends, but if you continue to ignore my rules, you won't be able to see any of them." Layla sighed, and nuzzled Gemma. "I'm glad you're safe..".

"Okay," she said, ashamed. She had thought that only a few horse-lengths away was close enough, but apparently she was wrong. "I'm sorry, Layla. I won't do it again. I'll try really hard this time."

"It's mommy-" She corrected, "And I know you will. I know you tried hard this time, I just can't let you get hurt..." She said, noticing a few thorns still on Gemma's muzzle. "Gemma!" She said sternly, pulling out the rest of the thorns.

"I was grazing . . ." she made a face as one of the thorns fell out. "And I ran into a thistle bush without knowing it," she shuddered. "At least I think it was a thistle bush."

Layla shook her head, "You're done grazing..." She sighed, "I refuse to let this happen again. If you want to play with your friends, I will have to be next to you, okay?" She said sternly.

"My foal is coming soon. I am producing milk, so you will nurse. If they ask you to play while I'm sleeping, wake me up." She explained, nuzzling Gemma to calm her.

(do horses normally nurse at 11 months? I'm not sure at what age foals are normally separated from their mothers in the wild

"Okay," Gemma sighed with relief, and returned the nuzzle with a smile. "But can't I graze, mommy? It tastes so good," she shuffled her hooves.

(Usually 6 months, but Layla doesn't want her to get hurt grazing right now)

"No." She said simply, "No grazing, and please don't wander off without Mommy." She said.

Eyes downcast, Gemma nodded feebly, all ready anticipating the many nights of hunger ahead. But if Layla said it was bad to graze, then it must be. Deciding that she couldn't displease her mommy by just lying on the ground and staying still, she sprawled out on the grass, rolling over a few times before lying on her side with a snort. She tried to lie completely still for several moments, but it was impossible. She fidgeted with excess energy.

"Mommy?" she turned onto her other side. "Can we do something?"

"Can we go for a walk in the forest?" she asked, excitedly springing to her feet. "It's nice and cool in there."
