This farmer is a hobby farmer. He doesn't do it for his living. I know all about farming and how the summer months are. And I know my neighbor, I won't go into his habits on here to explain myself.

you did the right thing by asking about them and offering to help build the pen. Other than that though, there's not much you can do since they aren't your chickens any more. You're heart is in the right place though!

You are a good neighbor, and you said he has a bad hand? Well that alone will slow him down, so I completely agree that offering to help build something he wants to do anyway...is GREAT!

Maybe make a work date with barbeque involved and get it done...and old fashioned "barn raising" so to say...if he gladly accepted the run, he may love the help with the actual fencing project...

What you have done so far is very kind and it sounds like he appreciates your help. Just remember they are his chickens now and as long as he is taking care of them (food, water, clean area and enough space) it is up to him how they live. I know it is hard to see other's animals not being cared for the same way you would care for them but sometimes we have to keep our hands off as well. I see this every day when I am going to work and coming home. I see horses not cared for the same way I would care for them but that doesn't mean that they are not being cared for. I applaud your helping your neighbor and hope that your friendship grows.

I'm so glad everything turned out OK! Sometimes people are reluctant to accept a helping hand. You know, a little bit shy about it. From what you describe, when you guys actually went over with that kennel, he was tickled pink!

Good job! People are very hard to read sometimes.
