I have never heard of any bird that NEEDS a male to lay an egg. I am sure someone that has quail will answer.

Okay, this is probably gonna gross out some people, but......

I always joking refer to a chicken's (or any bird's) egg as nothing more than it's period wrapped up in a shell....

To my knowledge, there is no bird that will not lay without a male...but i also don't know of any that autoinsemminate (not sure that's a word) either. So, you can have all the eggs you want without a male but they will never make babies.
