Please dummy check my brooder

You can get the ceramic ones at petsmart or petsuper Market in the reptile section. I think I paid about $9 for mine. I also use the ones from the feed store and only use a 75W heat lamp for reptiles and mine are on 24/7 and not had a problem. But I wouldn't trust them with a 150W or 250w bulb.

We use a similiar set-up and love it. We actually put the cardboard around the outside of the crate as we found the chicks like to interact with us as well as our cats and dog. So, when we were right there with them during the day, when it is a bit warmer, we would move the cardboard away and everyone could interact with one another. It was really sweet and we have way too many pictures of our cats and dog with the little chicks in the crate. this also seemed to help in general with chicks becoming acquainted with us and the other animals.

Also, following up on the light situation. We also had to replace the plate over our electrical outlet with a ceramic one due to the same sort of things mentionned perviously with burning. Our outlets could not tolerate the 24/7 usage. We also live in an older house where I hate to say the electrical system is not all that up-to-date. So, far so good anyway and we will be moving into our own house in a couple of months!

Good luck with your new chicks!

The Farm Coop does have brooder lights tucked away, so I'll get one today.

Do I just need one brooder light for my setup?

They didn't have a ceramic bulb, but maybe I can find one elsewhere (there is a 'lil fish and reptile store in town - good idea to check there). I think anything over 100 W will be way too warm, tho. It was hitting 94 deg. with just two 60 W bulbs.

TPantali, how did you attach the cardboard on the outside of the cage? I could use those clothes pin type clamps, perhaps.

Cheers,
Michelle
