Nice ChickInDelight! I love the window idea. I wish we were not paranoid parents. Ours are free range when we are home only, otherwise they have a huge run. Why did you change the door?

I love how it looks rustic! Is the top window decor or does it serve a purpose?

The window on the top is used for ventilation. I also love the look of it. Total cost for this coop was around $100.00 as we used wood that my husband cut off our farm. The roofing was on an old building on the property. And we put in this really neat watering system. The great thing is..... They are actually using it.

This is my coop. Used with all boards used and recycled off of our property. The roof is off an old building here as well. I love my rustic barn and so do my chicks!

I was wondering if the lattice in your pics serves a purpose. Someone is selling some cheap down the street and I was wondering if that could be an alternative to hardware cloth for the bottom of our run.

This is my first post so please be gentle. After a lot of reading on here, this is what I came up with. I'm using a 3" PVC waterer with nipples and a 3" PVC gravity feeder. I built the "auto roll out" nesting boxes. I purchased nesting pads and the girls weren't too interested in them what so ever. Pulled the pads and they are all about it now. I have not seen them use the roosting bars as of yet, but I'm hopeful!

Thoughts? Comments?

I mistakenly bought a coop from the store thinking it would happily house my 5 orpingtons (hah. no) So since that already ate into my budget quite a bit I basically re purposed the coop/run into just a coop by gutting the interior and adding more ventilation and more roosts (so far so good). Its a work in progress and I'm trying to figure out how I will winterize it.
Then I enclosed it in a run so the girls can have space to roam even when I'm not around. We have no landscaping in the back yard and are very exposed to predators and marauding neighbor chicken flocks out for blood.
I had access to left over wood which helped a great deal so I think including the coop I spent about $300 Now I'm at the fun part where its all about the details! I've since added a bunch of old branches for them to hop on and replaced the ladder and finished the paving in the front. For my first build ever I'm pretty proud of it.
