Please explain the genetics of a Splash Silkie

The only way you could have purchased 6, for sure, splash and 6, for sure, blue eggs would have been if she has one totally splash pen and one pen with black and splash mixed together because this is the way blue/black/splash works.

Blue x Blue will yield 50% Blue, 25% Black, and 25% Splash chicks

Blue x Black will yield 50% Blue and 50% Black chicks

Black x Splash will yield 100% Blue chicks

Blue x Splash will yield 50% Blue and 50% Splash chicks

Splash x Splash will yield 100% Splash chicks

Thanks to all that replied, I appreciate it immensely!!

I have emailed the lady and left it in her court on a suggestion for making this right. I really want the correct eggs from the correct colors. If I had wanted white, I would have purchased white!!!

Thanks again for all the information....it will help us later on down the road too when we decide to breed!!

FYI- one of my splash cochins that I got from a breeder appeared solid white until she was almost 4 months old. The splash finally started to appear, but it is very pale. I think this is one of those results from too much splash x splash breeding. The other splash chicks I got from them are nice and dark- go figure.

I agree. I have a Polish splash chick that is all white except for one dark feather, however, that still shouldn't be a partridge chick there.

Interesting thread.

My daughter settled on blue Silkies for her show birds (and breeding) so it's good to have some more understanding of the way the colors are likely to sort themselves out.

Here is here reply:

"I have breed and raised Silkies for years and one thing I have noticed, is everyone has their own opinion when it comes to splashes and blues!

If you are displeased with your "whites" you can return them and I will replace those eggs. Exactly how many "whites" do you have?"

So do you guys think this is fair on the replacement?

THanks!!

It would be fairer to replace with chicks of the same age, but she may not have any. I would ask for photos of her breeder birds that are penned together. I would suggest getting birds bred from blue and splash parents. You may not get any splash, but it will help prevent you from getting a washed out splash.

The partridge is not by any stretch a blue chick, so I am wondering at how mixed her pens are.

I too was wondering if that partridge chick was from those eggs. If so, then she doesn't have her birds separated properly to be able to sell a certain color.

If it were me, I would not give her 3 birds back for 3 eggs. Unless she is going to replace all the splash eggs. How many eggs did you get to hatch out of the dozen? You should have had a better hatch rate since you picked up the eggs and they were not shipped. I have at least a 95% hatch rate with my own eggs. Sometimes, I get 100%.

If I had done that, I myself would not have ask for the birds back. Esp if it were my mistake. She should take the loss. But, that's JMO.

Somewhere I missed that the eggs were picked up. If that is the case, ask to see her breeders and their breeding pens. Then select which pen you want eggs from.

Hatch rate varies dramatically depending on the incubator and the knowledge/luck an individual has. Temperature and humidity stability play key roles.

I agree, that hatch rates varied depending on knowledge/luck and the incubator. I just have a much better hatch rate with my own.

Well Sonoran, I might be wrong but the seller only lives one hour from the buyer. So, I couldn't see why she would have shipped, but I could be wrong. They could have shipped them though. JMO, if they were only an hour away, I would pick the eggs up and look at her breeding pens. I personally think that she would be better off selling the chicks and buying another dozen eggs.

I may be wrong too when I say a splashxsplash only produces splash. I also do not know how many generations you can breed back to until you wash the color out.

That is why I am working on some Blue Roo's right now to put with my splash to bring the color back out.
